Position Title: Communications Assistant

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT:
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the worldโs largest humanitarian organization dedicated to achieving Zero Hunger (Sustainable Development Goal 2 - SDG2) by 2030. WFP works to ensure that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, have access to the nutritious food they need to survive and thrive.
Since 1979, WFP has been supporting the Cambodian people by responding to emergency needs and enhancing long-term food and nutrition security for vulnerable households and communities. Over the years, WFP has played a key role in building resilience by supporting rural infrastructure development, nutrition programmes, disaster response efforts, and school feeding initiatives that promote children's education and health.
With the launch of the new Country Strategic Plan (CSP) 2024โ2028, WFP is strengthening its role as both a humanitarian and development partner to the Cambodian government. The focus is on improving food security and nutrition, enhancing human capital through nutrition and social protection, and building climate resilience via sustainable food systems and disaster risk management.
To achieve these goals, WFP is committed to increasing its advocacy and visibility, ensuring that its contributions are well-communicated to the public, government, donors, and key partners. This involves the strategic use of multi-media platforms to showcase WFPโs impact and highlight its evolving role in Cambodiaโs development journey.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT:
As part of WFP Cambodiaโs communication and advocacy efforts, it conveys key messages, achievements, and impact to a broad audience, including government stakeholders, donors, partners, and the wider public. This requires the creation of compelling narratives, engaging digital content, and well-structured communication materials that align with WFPโs strategic priorities.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent will be responsible for:
1. Assisting in the development of various communications contents to raise WFPโs and donorsโ visibility, showing the impacts of the programme and creating momentum for further actions.
- Collect and produce videos and photos for use in various communications platforms, particularly the social media platforms, to enhance coverage and support of WFPโs activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages and standards
- Support the development of inspiring human-interest stories, showcasing the impacts of the programmes and creating momentum for further actions
- Provide layout & design support for various reports, bulletins, factsheets, posters, banners, stickers, new year cards, etc.
- Liaise with multi-media companies and communications experts to support the production of the contents
- Translate various English communications contents into Khmer to facilitate the understanding and reception of WFPโs advocacy products
2. Contributing to the effective conversion of communication content through social media, web, local media, and other platforms.
- Assist in managing WFPโs social media platforms and monitor their daily engagement and report on their monthly traffic including reach and engagement
- Support communications and media engagement activities in events and donor visits, press conferences, briefings, and media interviews with senior management
- Assist in building and maintaining relations with media, journalists, editors, reporters, etc.
- Monitor traditional and social media and report relevant information to senior staff to inform the development and/or evaluation of communications activities and strategies.
3. Supporting the archiving and tracking of WFP-related communications contents for in-house use and external sharing
- Archive and update all digital communications contents (e.g., photos, videos) for in-house use and external sharing
- Track and share links of WFP news in media & social media monthly to facilitate WFP communication with donors
- Maintain records and databases, such as journalist and media outlet contact lists, to ensure the information is accurate, organized and readily available for others to access.
- Distribute communications guidelines for WFP staff to refer to when creating content.
4. Others
- Carry out other tasks as if required
SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENT:
- Demonstrated interest/experience in social media management, digital and social media campaigns, community work and other development related fields
- Ability to precisely present ideas and concepts in both oral and written manner
- Knowledgeable of Adobe package and able to handle a professional camera for photos and footages
- Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment
- Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing
- Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills
- Exhibited proficiency in developing and managing relations with media
- Motivated to contribute towards development and to serve with others
- Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel
DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE:
- Has a minimum of 5 years of work experience related to communications, multi-media production, social media management, or other relevant projects.
- Has demonstrated an ability to perform routine communication techniques and activities in line with WFPโs operating standards.
STANDARD MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Completion of secondary school education. A post-secondary certificate or bachelorโs degree in a relevant area, e.g. communications, media, journalism, digital marketing, communications for development or related fields is desirable.
Language:
- Fluency in both spoken and written English and Khmer is required.
