Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is found in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and this position is located in the Rights of Older Persons Unit, Equality and Non-Discrimination Branch (END), Thematic and Special Procedures Division (TSP) at OHCHR Headquarters in Geneva. The Associate Human Rights Officer reports to the head of the unit. The focus of the position is the implementation of the rights of older persons. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Associate Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties: โ€ข Assists in developing and implementing advocacy campaigns by developing multimedia products, e.g. podcasts, social media posts, newsletters, videos and further issues of the OHCHR newsletter #Agency&Dignity. โ€ข Researches and collects information pertaining to human rights matters, specifically related to the rights of older persons. from a variety of data sources (e.g. communications, publications, the press) to keep abreast of issues/events and provide up-to-date information; assists in the analysis of information, to include the impact on the countries and thematic mandates on the human rights situation in assigned area. Carries out basic research on rights of older persons, including collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources. โ€ข Assists in performing consulting assignments by developing an interactive training package on the promotion of rights of older persons that can be adapted for policy makers, CSOs, youth and other stakeholders, planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change. โ€ข Drafts a variety of reports and correspondence and contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications that relate to rights of older persons. โ€ข Participates in the IGWG and assists in the preparation of summaries of results. โ€ข Maintains awareness of current human rights issues, to include relevant political and legal developments in the country(ies) concerned. โ€ข Participates in human rights training programmes for national law enforcement officials, representatives of the civil society and human rights non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in order to promote national capacity building. โ€ข Reviews human rights issues, including their gender dimensions, and participates in discussions with other Human Rights Officers (HROs) on the integration of these issues into political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programmes. โ€ข Assists in promoting efforts for community mobilisation and those that focus on exercise of rights of older persons. โ€ข Participates with other HROs in discussions with relevant authorities and other influential actors with the aim of stopping or preventing human rights violations or seeks other remedial action by the authorities to prevent similar violations occurring in the future. โ€ข Liaises with government, NGOs, Civil Society organizations, UN agencies and other partners to create baseline data on the human rights situation, with special attention to vulnerable groups. โ€ข Designs and maintains database to track project progress. โ€ข Performs other related duties as required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional (G to P).
