Context
NRC has been working in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2001. Its programmes focus on the sectors of Education, Rapid Response to Population Movements (RRMP), Protection and Humanitarian Mediation, Shelter, EHA (Shelter/Wash), and Information, Counselling, and Legal Assistance (ICLA) in favour of populations forced to move.
Ituri is a province in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is located further north and shares borders with Uganda and South Soudan. It has one of the most critical security situations in the country. Around fifteen armed actors are still active in the province. These include local armed groups (CODECO, Zaire, FPIC, FRPI, Mai-Mai...) and an international actor, the ADF, known to be originally from neighboring Uganda.
NRC's office in Ituri has about sixty staff members. The projects implemented address issues in the following sectors: Education, Rapid Response to Population Movements (RRMP), Protection against Violence, Shelter, WASH (Shelter/Wash), and Information, Counseling and Legal Assistance (ICLA).
