VN 26/07 Junior Data Processing Operations Engineer โ Meteorological Satellite Product Operations
EUMETSAT is Europeโs meteorological space agency. As an inter-governmental organisation, EUMETSATโs role is to establish and operate meteorological satellites to monitor the weather, climate and the environment from space. This includes the provision of information products derived from satellite data in an operational manner - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
EUMETSAT is looking for someone passionate about working in a highly international context and interested in contributing to generating value out of satellite observations. As a member of the Real-time Services and System Operations Division (RSO), the Junior Data Processing Operations Engineer supports the roll-out and coordination of new meteorological satellite products (Level 1 & Level 2) into operations across EUMETSATโs operational programmes. This includes the processing of meteorological satellite instrument data products from Level 0 to Level 1 and Level 2 in coordination with technical experts from the Technical and Scientific Support Department (TSS) and within the Operations and Services to the Users Department (OPS).
The initial focus will be on developing capabilities to reach full proficiency in the area of data processing operations across the programmes in a 24/7 operational environment.
Duties
- Contribute to the roll out of new meteorological products into operations for all of EUMETSATโs mandatory satellite programmes, i.e. via support to Product Validation Review Boards;
- Maintain documentation relating to the operational meteorological products data processing systems and operations of the data processing system assets within these environments;
- Support the monitoring and reporting of operational meteorological products together with experts from other divisions within EUMETSAT;
- Contribute to the resolution of user enquiries from the user community requesting knowledge and information on EUMETSAT meteorological satellite products;
- Support the configuration and routine operations of the operational data processing systems in support of EUMETSATโs existing and new satellite programmes.

QUALIFICATIONS
University Degree in Meteorology, Physics or similar scientific discipline.
LANGUAGES Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

Duties

Skills and Experience
- Basic understanding of Level 0, Level 1 and Level 2 products from meteorological satellite instruments;
- General meteorological satellite remote sensing, its algorithms and validation methods;
- Strong IT skills will emphasis on MS Office, Linux, BASH, Python required;
- Ability to work in a complex and sometimes fast-changing environment required;
- Excellent team-working and interpersonal skills required.
- Very good presentation and writing skills required;
- Some experience with meteorological remote sensing from Spaceborne instruments would be advantageous.
Employment Conditions
The initial contract will be of 2 yearsโ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
This post is graded A1 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 5,912 per month (net of internal tax but excluding pension contribution and insurances) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
