5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesUN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation. Responding to crisis and post-crisis context is part of UN-Habitatโ€™s mandate and strategic plan. In Ukraine, UN-Habitat is supporting national and subnational governments in their recovery efforts, linking short-term reconstruction needs to longer-term resilience solutions. At the local level, UN-Habitat provides support to recovery planning efforts of local governments through its Urban Lab established in Kyiv. The programme also strives to increase Ukrainian urban planning and design capacities, through support to academia, think tanks and practitioners, among others. At the national level, UN-Habitat provides support to the government of Ukraine, and more specifically to the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, on the development of national policies and instruments that guide regional and local governmentsโ€™ recovery. UN-Habitatโ€™s engagement towards a sustainable recovery of cities in Ukraine is underpinned by its efforts to strengthen the digital and data capacities of national, regional and local government entities to improve decision-making and enable implementation of climate-resilient recovery planning, through UNITAC, a collaboration between UN-Habitat, the UN Office for Information and Communication Technologies (OICT) and the HafenCity University (HCU).

ContextThe Tech Volunteers for Resilience (Tech4R) initiative โ€” jointly led by UNDP ICPSD and UNV โ€” connects skilled digital volunteers with UN agencies to co-create open-source solutions for resilience and recovery. In partnership with UN-Habitat Ukraine, Tech4R is developing a GIS-Based Recovery Dashboard for Borodianka hromada (Kyiv Oblast). The dashboard will visualize reconstruction and environmental risk data through clear, user-friendly maps and interfaces to support transparent recovery planning. The Visualization & Design Volunteers will be responsible for creating the visual identity of the dashboard, ensuring it aligns with UN-Habitat branding and is intuitive for non-technical users.

Task DescriptionThe Volunteers will: โ€ข Design the visual layout and interface elements of the GIS-Based Recovery Dashboard. โ€ข Create engaging map legends, icons, and infographics representing reconstruction and environmental data. โ€ข Apply UN-Habitatโ€™s and Tech4Rโ€™s visual identity guidelines (colors, fonts, and layouts). โ€ข Collaborate with the Dashboard Development and Localization teams to ensure bilingual consistency (Ukrainian / English). โ€ข Optimize dashboard visuals for both desktop and mobile use. โ€ข Ensure that all designs support data clarity, accessibility, and inclusivity. โ€ข Contribute to the documentation of style guidelines and design templates for future replication.
