Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Womenโ€™s China Office in Beijing supports and carries out work on (i) enhancing women's economic empowerment (WEE); (ii) ending violence against women (EVAW); (iii) innovative work to address gender issues in China (QWFIS);(iv) contributingย to gender equality and womenโ€™s empowerment in China (CGF) and (v) using media to promote gender equality (Communication). In addition to the above, UN Women also actively participates and contributes to various UN inter-agency processes and collaborates with UN organizations around specificย programmeย areas.ย 

Sinceย 2023, UN Women China office has been collaborating with diverse stakeholders to introduce the RESPECTย framework โ€”an evidence-based approach to preventing violence against women and girls. The programme operates at theย national level with provincial pilots, and entails community-based interventions, social media campaigns, training sessions, and capacity-building initiatives to promote awareness and understanding of RESPECT framework in the Chinese context.ย 

Under the direct supervision of UN Women EVAW analyst and working with relevant programme and communication colleagues, the national intern for EVAW is supported to implement the tasks and activities outlined in the section below.ย 

Description of Responsibilities

Advocacy and Communication

Support the development of communication materials for theย International Symposium on Judicial Concepts and Practices for Womenโ€™s Rights Protectionย in collaboration with judicial sector partners. Support the dissemination of EVAW projectsโ€™ knowledge products and communication materials in Chinese and English. Contribute to planning and coordination ofย advocacy campaigns (e.g.ย 16 Days of Activism), including drafting messages, designing communication assets, and supporting event logistics. Support the preparation of visibility materials and success stories that highlight results and impact of UN Women Chinaโ€™s EVAW programmes.

Knowledge Management and Reporting

Consolidate and organize raw data, impact stories, and results collected from preventionย programmes acrossย multiple communities, including over 1,200 couple intervention records. Support development of project communication and knowledge products summarizing key results and lessons learned from EVAW interventions. Assist in the drafting and editing process of the China Office Annual Report and other reporting materials, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and alignment with UN Women corporate standards.

Programme Implementation and Supportย 

Support background research, drafting, and coordination for the development of Programme Documents (Prodoc). Provideย technical supportย in reviewing of programmatic documents, guidelines, standards, etc. as relevant including to seek and coordinate inputs from relevant experts at regional and HQ level Assist in arranging meetings, receiving visitors, taking minutes, placing, and screening telephone calls, and responding to external requests for information. Help to prepare procurement and programme related documentsย (e.g. request for Quotations) Provide administrative and technical support to events and workshops. Assistย inย maintaining filing system ensuring safekeeping of office documents.ย 
Assist in monitoring and reporting requirements by the office, including quarterly and annual reporting Undertake other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Education:

University studies preferably in one of the following disciplines: sociology, law, womenโ€™s studies. ย Candidates outside these fields may apply, provided they can justify in their cover letter and demonstrate competence in the technical test and/or interview. Meet one of the following:ย  Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a two-year period of graduation; or Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English and Chinese are required;ย  Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Other:

This internship position is open to Chinese nationals only.ย 

Remuneration:ย 

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources, such as universities or other institutions, will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
