Mission and objectivesUnited Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP/ROAP) helps to implement its global programmes in the regions by initiating, coordinating, and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental problems and emergencies.
ContextThe United Nations (UN) provides support to Member States in strengthening the rule of law providing coherent policy and legal assistance. The UN can support Member States in reviewing draft laws in line with universally agreed norms and standards to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Thailand is currently undertaking legislative reforms to amend and progressively develop a number of environmental laws. The UN will provide environmental rule of law assistance in relation to two of these laws, the draft amendment of the National Environmental Quality Promotion and Conservation Act and the draft Climate Change Act. English translations of these legal texts are required to enable coherent support across UN agencies.
Task DescriptionWe are seeking two Online Volunteers to support us by translating two draft laws: the draft amendment of the National Environmental Quality Promotion and Conservation Act and the draft Climate Change Act from Thai to English. To this end, the Online Volunteers are asked to: - Translate the draft amendment of the National Environmental Quality Promotion and Conservation Act, which is 46 pages long into English. - Translate the draft Climate Change Act, which is 38 pages long into English. - Ensure the translation is an accurate legal translation providing text that preserves the meaning and legal validity of the original language, concise and in line with our communications guidelines. The selected Online Volunteers will be provided with the document in the original language and will receive our communications guidelines as well as other guidance as needed. The Online Volunteers will have the opportunity to build connections with the environmental governance team at UNEP and learn about the ways in which the translated product contributes to advancing the environmental rule of law.
