Mission and objectivesThe United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that promotes volunteerism to support peace and development worldwide. Volunteerism can transform the pace and nature of development and it benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing volunteers.In most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded in long-established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within the communities. In this context, UN Volunteers take part in various forms of volunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers, host agencies and local communities.In all assignments, UN Volunteers promote volunteerism through their action and conduct. Engaging in volunteer activity can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and social realities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community. This will make the time they spend as UN Volunteers even more rewarding and productive.
ContextThe United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism. UNV has five Regional Offices in Amman (Arab States, Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States), Bangkok (Asia and the Pacific), Dakar (West and Central Africa), Nairobi (East and Southern Africa) and Panama City (Latin America and the Caribbean). The regional offices are the first entry point for partners wishing to engage with UNV. They offer UNV services and solutions to government partners, UN entities, civil society and the private sector, and take the lead in scoping and delivering UNV advisory services on volunteer infrastructure. They also provide oversight and strategic guidance to UNV's field units in the regions. In December 2023, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared 2026 as the International Volunteer Year (IVY 2026). It is a global initiative to celebrate the contributions of volunteers worldwide, increase visibility for volunteer efforts, inspire greater volunteering activities and strengthen the role of volunteerism in advancing sustainable development. It also seeks to raise global awareness of the impact of volunteers, inspire greater civic participation, and mobilize individuals, communities, and institutions to take action for positive change throughout 2026 and beyond. As part of Nigeriaโs visibility and awareness campaign for IVY 2026, strong social media outreach is essential. This role focuses on using digital platforms (Facebook, Instagram,X,Linkedin) to amplify key messages, share compelling content, and ensure wide public awareness of the year-long celebration. Through active engagement, consistent posting, and strategic promotion, volunteers will help spotlight volunteer stories, inspire public participation, and encourage individuals and organizations to take meaningful action. By contributing to this task, Online Volunteers will greatly support efforts toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Their visual content will inspire participation in volunteer-driven initiatives that advance sustainable development nationwide.
Task DescriptionWe are looking for 25 Online Volunteer who will, under the guidance of UNV West and Central Africa Communications Team and in close collaboration with the UNV Nigeria Field Unit communications team, support us by publicizing and raising awareness for IVD/ IVY 2026 and subsequently give visibility to same. For this purpose, selected Online Volunteers will support by sharing already produced social media cards and short videos to boost visibility and promote International Volunteer Day (IVD) and International Volunteer Year (IVY) 2026. They will share finalized content across personal social media platforms. Selected Online Volunteers will be provided with material relevant and necessary to perform the task. They will collaborate with the communications team to align messages with campaign guidelines.
