About this position:
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated environmental contractual to join a group of social and environmental professionals that provide technical support, direction, and leadership in promoting the Bank's strategic social and environmental priorities and ensuring that IDB financed projects and other activities are socially and environmentally sustainable.
The contractual will support the implementation of the Bank's operations and will ensure they comply with the IDB's ESPF and internationally recognized best practices.
The Environmental and Social Solutions Unit (VPS/ESG) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is responsible for ensuring that IDB financed projects and other activities are environmentally and socially sustainable and comply with the Bankโs environmental and social policy framework (ESPF) and previous environmental and social safeguard policies. Specialists in VPS/ESG provide the Bank and its borrowers with guidance on environmental and social safeguard issues and participate in project teams, providing technical input on social and environmental issues during project preparation/due-diligence and supervision.
What youโll do:
The selected candidate will be under the supervision of a Group Head in one of ESGโs Support to Operations Groups; providing environmental support in the preparation and supervision of operations and other activities not limited to the following:
- Provide support to project teams in the preparation of public sector operations which would include among others:
o The preparation of initial Environmental and Social Review Summary (ESRS), and/or ESRS as applicable. This product involves interaction with project teams in the preparation of public sector projects that present potential environmental and social impacts or risks.
o Prepare and review terms of reference for and review drafts and final versions of Environmental and/or Social Assessments, Environmental and/or Social Management Plans, Environment and Social Management Systems, Biodiversity Action Plans, and/or others, as required by Bank Policies.
o Participation in missions and preparation of aide memoires.
- Provide support to project teams in the supervision of public sector operations in several sectors throughout the region (although there will be a focus in the Caribbean countries) which would include among others:
o Carry out supervision missions to assigned projects and provide ongoing support for operation execution related to all social aspects according to Bank Policies.
o Participation in missions for the supervision of operations with a resulting supervision report and aide memoire.
o Provide written comments and recommendations to documents produced by internal and external clients.
o Review the terms of reference, draft and final versions of Environmental and Social Assessments, Management Plans, Biodiversity Action Plans, among others, of executing agencies required in application of Bank Policies.
- Perform the due diligence on environmental issues that are relevant to public sector projects.
- Participate in meetings with executing agencies and project team leaders to carry out supervision and/or preparation activities for projects. This entails providing guidance about application of Policiesโ requirements.
- Provide training on Bank Safeguards Policies or the new Environmental and Social Policy Framework (ESPF) to executing agencies and to internal clients at the Bank.
- Participate in training on the ESPF, as necessary.
TORs for missions must be drafted and approved by the supervisor for every mission travel the contractual participates in and shall be delivered according to ESG administrative manual for processing.
What you'll need:
- Education: Masterโs degree (or equivalent advanced degree) in environmental management, environmental engineering, environmental sciences, or other fields relevant to the responsibilities of the role.
- Experience: 7 years of relevant professional experience in the fields mentioned above. Knowledge of the IDBโs ESPF or experience working with other multi-lateral development bankโs policies is preferable. Experience in the Caribbean also preferable.
- Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese is preferable.

- Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries.
- Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
