Research Trainee (Adv#61/2025) icddr,b is a Bangladesh-based international health research institute that strives to solve key public health problems through high-quality scientific research and innovation. icddrb as a value-based organization encourages women and people with disabilities.
Despite significant progress in reducing maternal mortality during the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) era, Bangladesh must accelerate its efforts to meet the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of reducing the maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. Understanding the diseases, conditions, and complications leading to maternal deaths is critical in identifying and prioritizing targeted interventions.
However, major gaps persist in population-based data on the burden of pregnancy-related diseases, conditions, and complications experienced by women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period in Bangladesh. Addressing these evidence gaps will provide policymakers and program managers with crucial insights for designing, developing, and implementing tailored interventions to reduce maternal mortality and achieve SDG targets.
To assess the burden of pregnancy-related diseases, conditions, and complications among first-time pregnant women in rural Bangladesh, icddr,b is conducting a prospective cohort study. The study aims to generate robust evidence to inform policies and interventions that can enhance maternal health outcomes in the country.
Objective:
This Research Trainee will provide an opportunity for aspiring researchers to work with eminent public health researchers and receive hands-on training, exposure, and experience in a research based environment like icddr,b. The Traineeship programme is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and performance of the individuals who want to become an independent researcher at icddr,b.
The Traineeship is aimed at young, bright and capable individuals who have recently completed their Masters or primary professional education, are in the career formative stage (within 3 years of receiving their last degree), and are interested in making a career in research.
Key Responsibilities: The Research Trainee will be reporting to the Principal Investigator and responsible for collecting data; process, analyze and interpret data; also providing technical support in writing scientific reports, protocol and manuscripts. S/he will be involved in following activities -
Identify new research ideas; Assist in developing research proposal as per guidance of supervisor; Conduct literature review, analyze data and draw scientific inferences; Prepare report from the study results and share with supervisor; Assist in preparing and submitting manuscript for peer-reviewed journals; Prepare presentation slides and presentations in different scientific forums; Present and disseminate study findings at external platforms such as conferences and seminars as well as relevant stakeholders; Carry out other research-related necessities as and when required. Required qualifications and experience:Young, bright individuals who meet the following criteria and are aspiring to develop their career as public health researchers in the research-based environment at icddr,b are encouraged to apply.
MBBS with MPH or Masterโs Degree in Statistics/ Applied Statistics from a reputed university with an excellent academic record (CGPA of at least 3.5 on a 4-point scale for both Bachelorโs and Masterโs degrees) Previous work experience in public health research shall be given priority; Must have strong critical thinking skills, ability to identify substantive problems that threaten the research activities and the creative capacity to resolve these problems. S/he should be proactive, dynamic, and capable of working independently. Location: Dhaka

Contract Type and duration: Traineeship agreement; duration will be 1 year with a possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and performance. Salary & benefits: Stipend: Tk.78,350/- per month (consolidated) inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances. Income tax paid by icddr,b, and subsidized canteen and Transport is subject to space availability. Evaluation & Certification: The progress of the Trainees will be monitored and evaluated. On successful completion of training and final evaluation, the Research Trainee will be awarded certificate. Prospects:
After completing at least one year of Traineeship, Trainees will be eligible to apply for any other suitable posts against icddr,b vacancy announcements. However, such posts are not guaranteed. The selected Trainee will not be eligible for any other Traineeship/Fellowship program at the Centre.
