Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, \"Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection\". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences is responsible for assisting and advising Member States in research and development for the nuclear sciences, especially the physical and chemical sciences. Specifically, the Division provides support to Member States in the following fields: production of radioisotopes and radiolabelled products for applications in health care and industry; radiation source applications; research reactor utilization; applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation; nuclear and atomic data for applications; controlled nuclear fusion and isotope hydrology and geochemistry.The Physics Section is responsible for planning and implementing activities in the areas of (i) effective utilization of research reactors, (ii) fostering relevant research and development and applications using particle accelerators and related instrumentation, and (iii) plasma physics and fusion, in order to enable Member States to avail themselves of the benefits of nuclear sciences and technologies. It operates the Nuclear Science and Instrumentation Laboratory, located at the Agency's Laboratories in Seibersdorf, which assists laboratories in Member States to improve the effective utilization of nuclear spectrometry and related instrumentation by providing technical advice, training, calibration services, assistance with the modification and development of nuclear instruments and with new applications of nuclear spectrometry techniques in various fields, including energy related applications, environmental monitoring, industry, and the study of cultural heritage objects.

Main Purpose

As part of a team led by the Section Head Physics, the Research Reactor Specialist leads projects related to research and applications using research reactor and accelerator-based neutron sources, such as neutron beam techniques and their applications, neutron imaging, material characterization, modification and testing and isotope production as well as related capacity building and strategic and business planning for existing and new research reactors. These activities work towards the sustainability, enhancement and optimization of research reactor utilization in Member States for practical applications and fall within the Research and Applications with Accelerators and Neutron Sources sub-programme.

Role

The Research Reactor Specialist is: (1) a planner and coordinator, formulating, developing, organizing and implementing the IAEA's activities on utilization of research reactors and other neutron sources and related training ; (2) a facilitator, helping the Member States to establish cooperation among research reactor centres and nuclear education institutions, in developed and in developing countries, on the applications of research reactors and other neutron sources; (3) a scientific secretary/technical expert, planning and leading moderately complex Technical Meetings, and; (4) a technical and project officer, evaluating and engaged in the implementation of moderately complex Technical Cooperation (TC) projects, and promoting, co-ordinating and evaluating moderately complex Coordinated Research Projects (CRPs) in the promotion and preservation of peaceful uses of nuclear technologies and the continuing widespread application of research reactors and other neutron sources in various fields. In this role, the Research Reactor Specialist works in close co-operation with other specialists in areas such as applications of accelerators and nuclear instrumentation in a synergistic and complementary manner to address problems of common interest/concern.

Contributes to the planning, development and implementation of the Agency's sub-programme on Research and Applications with Accelerators and Neutron Sources and related matters.

Supports the effective utilization of research reactor and accelerator-based neutron sources, so as to contribute to continued advances and benefits to Member States from nuclear research, application and technology development.

Plans and leads moderately complex Technical Meetings, including identifying a subject, preparing the scope, selecting participants, coordinating the preparation of reports and documents.

Evaluates moderately complex TC projects, develops action plans and schedules, organizes and participates in seminars, workshops, and training courses, and implements expert missions including Integrated Research Reactor Utilization Review (IRRUR) peer review mission and training courses.

Promotes, coordinates and evaluates moderately complex CRPs in Member States and conducts moderately complex studies and assessments related to issues and trends.

Plans, organizes and conducts training on applications of research reactors and other neutron sources, and related topics.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

  • Doctorate Degree - Nuclear Physics or related field
  • Minimum seven years of relevant research experience working at a research reactor or accelerator-based neutron centre , of which three years at international level and proven ability in working with international projects or multinational teams.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of and experience in research reactors of various types and their use in capacity building, research and industry; sound knowledge of related facilities, techniques and nuclear instrumentation.
  • Familiarity of requirements in developing countries and/or collaboration with research reactor users in developing countries. Experience of collaboration with research reactor centre and national/international nuclear organization or institute in developing countries desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.

    Remuneration

    The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $84672 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 44114*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; Other benefits include 6 weeks' annual leave, home leave travel, pension plan and health insurance.         • Candidates appointed to posts in the Professional and higher categories are subject to IAEA rotation policy and their maximum tour of service shall normally be seven years.
