The Regional Studies Division (RSD) seeks a dynamic and highly motivated Research Officer with strong quantitative, econometric and analytical skills to support research projects including contributions to the APD REO; contribute to the division's regular operational work and macroeconomic, trade, and financial market surveillance activities; facilitate departmental collaboration on cross country analysis; and support the preparation of surveillance committee and management briefings, along with presentations for policy meetings and forums. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work closely with APD country desks and senior staff, including the Director and the Deputy Director in charge of the Division.
The Research Analyst will be expected to demonstrate strong analytical and presentational skills, and attention to detail in performing the following tasks:
- Contributing to the analytical work underpinning the Regional Economic Outlook, including editing and drafting the analytical chapters and background papers.
- Performing complex econometric analysis for analytical projects on regional macro-surveillance issues, cross-country, household- and firm-level analyses.
- Collecting statistical materials, comparing and evaluating alternative data sources, and ensuring consistency of series and definitions.
- Designing, constructing, and maintaining comprehensive and fully documented cross-country databases in accordance with data management requirements.
- Selecting appropriate computer software, and writing, updating, modifying, and executing computer programs for statistical and econometric analysis.
- Presenting analysis of results, including coding them into charts, tables, and being able to edit model specifications for robustness checks.
- Preparing presentations, including infographics and other visualizations, in support of the division and front office.
Minimum qualifications
Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in economics, finance, statistics or computer science, or a related field; or a university degree, or equivalent, supplemented by a minimum of six years of relevant professional experience; or a minimum of two years of relevant experience at Grade A8, or equivalent, is required.
In addition to the above minimum qualifications, the successful candidate would have:
- Advanced proficiency in the use of analytical, statistical and econometric software packages such as STATA, EViews, R, and MATLAB.
- Experience working with macroeconomic data and writing macroeconomic research reports.
- Familiarity with large households and firms' data.
- Ability to use a range of visual presentation tools such as MS Excel charts, PowerPoint, Tableau, and other similar tools.
- Understanding of macroeconomic relationships, experience in processing of economic data, and ability to gather and process statistical materials with minimal supervision and to report results cogently either orally or in writing are critical.
- Familiarity with economic issues and data specific to the Asia Pacific region is a plus.
- Proven ability to manage large and complex databases and develop summary analysis, including summary tables and charts, and sound analytical and problem-solving skills including a knowledge of statistical applications and techniques.
- Familiarity with Fund databases and commercial data sources, such as CEIC, Haver, DataStream, and Bloomberg, would be desirable.
- Sound organizational and data management skills, and ability to handle several responsibilities and work under tight time constraints.
- Personal qualities include an ability to work independently and in collaboration with others, and to perform a broad range of assignments accurately and reliably under time pressure. Flexibility and a willingness to work occasional overtime.
- Proven experience in dealing with all levels of staff in responding to a wide range of inquiries.
This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent's performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
