Job Summary

The Commodities Unit of the Research Department is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Research Officer (RO) with strong quantitative and analytical skills.

The Commodities Unit provides timely assessments of energy and commodity markets developments. It produces research to enhance our understanding of commodity markets and commodity related issues including macro-critical issues linked to energy transitions and climate change. The candidate will support the CU’s commodity market surveillance agenda and contribute to analytical work of the unit.

The successful candidate should have the proven ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment. The Research Officer will be responsible for a wide range of support including, but not limited to, data gathering, analysis of economic or statistical data sets, and high-quality analyses. More specifically, the primary responsibility of the RO will be to work on energy, metal, and agricultural markets and climate change related issues.

The main responsibilities include:

  • Researching, collecting, and compiling information on commodity markets; maintaining and updating quantitative and qualitative economic, financial, and statistical databases (including retrieving data from Bloomberg, HAVER, and DataStream).
  • Processing, consolidating, and transforming data sets, using statistical and/or econometric techniques. Preparing charts and tables, accessing and manipulating macroeconomic data from a wide range of sources.
  • Assisting staff economists in conducting quantitative data analysis utilizing econometric and other statistical tools.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in economics, finance, statistics, computer science, or a related field of study is required; or a university degree, or equivalent, supplemented by a minimum of six (6) years of relevant professional experience; Alternatively, a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience at Grade A08, or equivalent, is required.

    The ideal candidate will possess:

    • Exemplary data management, organizational, and macroeconomic skills and be proficient in a range of techniques needed to support the work of the department.
    • Good knowledge of statistics, econometrics, and the macroeconomy.
    • Excellent communication skills including skills to access data via intranet and knowledge of internet software, databases, and protocols. The ability to work independently under minimum supervision and to be accountable for the accuracy of both data and programs.
    • Knowledge of Excel, Freelance, PowerPoint, and any other graphics package.
    • A good working knowledge of STATA is required and knowledge of econometric software packages, such as Eviews, MATLAB, R, Python, SAS are a plus.
    • Commodity market experience or research is a plus but not required.

      This is a one-year contractual appointment. Contractual appointments at the IMF are renewable for up to four years of cumulative contractual service, pending incumbent's performance, budget availability, and continuous business need.
