Mission and objectivesSince its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been the global authority that sets the environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEPโs mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP works through its divisions as well as regional, liaison and out-posted offices and a growing network of collaborating centres of excellence.
ContextThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Early Warning and Assessment Division provides timely, scientifically credible, policy-relevant environmental analyses, data and information for decision-making and action planning for sustainable development. It monitors, analyzes and reports on the state of the global environment, assesses global, regional and national environmental trends and provides early warning of emerging environmental threats. The Early Warning and Assessment Division works closely with a large number of partners and collaborating centres in all regions of the world, and has established functional networks for data, information, assessments and capacity development. The SDG and Environment Statistics Unit acts as the coordinator for work related to the SDG indicators and official environment statistics within UNEP. This post is part of the European Commission project entitled โEnhancing countriesโ capacities for measuring progress on the transition towards a circular economyโ (2024-2026) and is located in the SDG and Environment Statistics Unit, of the Early Warning and Data Analytics Branch in the Early Warning and Assessment Division. The project aims to enhance statistical capacities of countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean through sub-regional and national training for 6 selected countries to develop and disseminate circular economy related indicators. Task DescriptionWithin the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Project Manager or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Project Associate will: โข Support coordination and cooperation of project implementation with partner agencies, regional offices and countries; โข Conduct independent research and prepare written outputs on SDGs and other statistical indicators related to the environment and/or economy, e.g. draft literature review analysis, background papers, sections of reports, inputs to publications, etc.; โข Assist in the preparation and implementation of training workshops, seminars, etc.; prepares agenda, background documents, identifies participants, makes presentations on assigned topics/activities, and drafts workshop reports. โข Provide support for consultative meetings, webinars, and conferences โข Support outreach and ensure that activities, tools and materials are available online โข Support the monitoring progress of the project activities, budget and status โข Assist with reporting requirements in relation to the project and to SDGs โข Draft technical sections of project proposals and/or project documents for donor submissions. โข Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor. As an active UNEP team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNEP and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, expected outcomes/results include: โข Participating in strengthening dialogues between Producers (National Statistics Office) and Users (Policymakers) of circular economy, environment statistics and information โข Dissemination, capacity development and uptake of the circular economy-based indicators in the project sub-regions and countries (Material Flow Accounting/ Material Footprint (12.2.1); Domestic Material Consumption (12.2.2); Waste management and recycling: Food Waste (12.3.1); Hazardous Waste (12.4.2); Recycling Rates (12.5.1)) โข Strengthened national, regional, and global data and indicator frameworks for monitoring and reporting on the environmental dimension of the SDGs โข Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: โข Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); โข Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; โข Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities. โข Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; โข Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers; โข Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Living conditions and remarksThe Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenyaโs population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The countryโs GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenyaโs people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenyaโs main food crops are โmaize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.โ (FAO). Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP. The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest.
