Our Work In Sierra Leone:

Partners In Health (PIH) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.

Position Overview

The Pharmacy Technician works under the guidance of a Licensed Pharmacist to assist in providing medication and healthcare products and any relevant medication information to patients and healthcare workers. The role involves ensuring effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders such as Koidu Government Hospital, PIH-Wellbody Clinic, and other hospitals and primary care facilities. Additionally, the Pharmacy Technician must be a strong advocate for the improvement of healthcare services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work under the supervision of a Licensed pharmacist
• Account for wastage of medications and consumables that were not used on the ward
• Ensure pharmacies are clean and organized
• Ensure emergency supplies are available to staff for changes in patient care that may occur while the Pharmacist is not available
• will be scheduled for night duties and on-call service for medication during weekends
• Maintain confidential and accurate pharmacy records
• Other functions as requested by the pharmacy supervisor or a reasonable request from clinical staff assistance regarding medications
• Complete understanding and appreciation of the use and side effects of prescription medication
• Collection, organization, and evaluation of patient information in regard to medications
  • Providing information and evaluation to patients, ensuring patients can safely consume and store their medicines for optimal benefits to the patient.
  • Promote rational drug use
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stock and anticipating needed medication and supplies
  • Placing and expediting orders, verifying receipts, and removing outdated drugs
  • Responsible for managing all reports from the pharmacy and producing a consumption report at the end of every month
  • follows up with the warehouse and makes sure items requested, if an emergency delivered as soon as possible or, if routine, is delivered within 24 hours
  • follow up with the hospital store and make sure all needed materials are supplied

    Education and Work Experience Requirements

    • Diploma in Pharmacy
      • Two years of working experience in a similar role
      • Having fast analytical skills for risk assessment and able to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
      • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with multicultural staff and partners.
      • Interest in social justice and health care issues
      • Professional proficiency in English is required, and proficiency in the Kono language is desired but not the criteria
      • Must not hold dual employment
      • Computer literacy and experience in Office programs: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc
