5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does โ€” in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to childrenโ€™s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life โ€” in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions โ€” her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a societyโ€™s most disadvantaged citizens โ€” addressing inequity โ€” not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations. Through 2018-2021 Strategic Plan, UNICEFโ€™s work in education prioritizes equity โ€“ supporting all children regardless of their circumstances to have equal opportunities in education and learning โ€“ helping children secure basic skills such as literacy and numeracy and a wider range of skills. This includes paying particular attention to early learning, girlsโ€™ education, education for children with disabilities as well as education in emergencies and post-crisis context. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, UNICEFโ€™s education programme is focused on the area of inclusive early learning, quality primary and secondary education and intercultural and inclusive education. In the area of inclusive early learning, the programme supports the continued expansion of preschool education programme.

ContextA key initiative in UNICEFโ€™s outreach and engagement with young people is U-Report, a global open-source mobile messaging platform that empowers youth to voice their opinions on issues that matter to them, driving citizen-led development and fostering positive change. Since its launch in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in 2018, U-Report has played an important role in encouraging young people to share their views on relevant topics, facilitating two-way communication between youth and decision-makers. The platform allows for the anonymous, real-time collection and analysis of data, which is made available to the public, institutions, and partners through the U-Report website. In May 2024, UNICEF BiH developed a new U-Report strategy aimed at making U-Report more visible and participated, engaging, and impactful. This strategy is designed to empower children and youth to influence processes, from UNICEFโ€™s programs to broader decision-making processes, using a peer-to-peer approach. Building from the meaningful participation of adolescents and youth as a cornerstone of U-Reportโ€™s activities implementation and planning, it aligns with UNICEFโ€™s Strategic Plan 2022-2025, which emphasizes the organizationโ€™s commitment to being child- and youth-driven. UNICEF BiH has also developed a work plan focused on improving communication with young people. The plan aims to better engage youth across various platforms, ensuring their voices are heard and considered in UNICEFโ€™s programs and planning. It outlines specific actions to enhance the organizationโ€™s communication efforts, making them more responsive and appealing to the needs of young people, particularly through digital and social media channels. As part of these combined efforts, UNICEF BiH is seeking 2 Online Volunteers to develop communication, promotion material and digital content for U-Report platform and website. These volunteers will play a key role in developing and adapting U-Report's content (i.e., polls, chatbot, information packages and promotion) to make it more youth-friendly, relatable and participatory. Throughout their engagement with UNICEF, online volunteers will have the opportunity to work on U-Report, a platform directly engaging children and youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina for positive change in society. They will benefit from the expertise and mentoring of UNICEF staff, and connect with professionals and peers, expanding their network while contributing to real social change. This flexible role allows assignees to volunteer from anywhere on their own schedule, and a recognition of their commitment and impact through a certificate from UNICEF, strengthening their professional experiences and resumes.

Task DescriptionWe are looking for two experienced and creative Online Volunteers who will support our Education (Adolescent Development and Participation - ADAP) and Communication teams with the development of outreach materials for U-Report promotion and digital content for U-Report platform and website/social media. In close collaboration with the ADAP team, the Online Volunteers will: - Provide design support (Volunteer one) a. Design 4 social media visuals to promote U-Report (3 for upcoming polls and 1 for the chatbot). b. Review and validate 3 U-Report polls and 1 chatbot text to ensure they are youth-friendly, engaging, and clear. - Support Content development (Volunteer two) a. Write 2 blog articles (700-1000 words) for the U-Report website, highlighting key insights, youth perspectives, or U-Report impact. b. Prepare general pitch material for introducing U-Report to partners, consolidating existing materials and sources to create a structured narrative for upcoming partnerships to be established by UNICEF U-Report Core Team. The Online Volunteers will be provided with material and other sources to develop the materials and assigned deliverables as required and available. For close coordination and discussion, the Online Volunteer is expected to be available for calls via Microsoft Teams. This assignment provides Online Volunteers with an opportunity to develop and strengthen their skills in communication and youth / partners outreach, networking within UNICEF programmes (in particular Education programme) and other learning experiences.
