Position Title: Managing Director, Institutional Partnerships
Reports to: Chief Policy and Partnership Officer
Location: Remote U.S.
Employment Type: Full-time with up to 20% travel
Position Overview
The Managing Director, Institutional Partnerships is a key leadership position within the U.S. Coordination Site working in collaboration with leadership across Marketing & Communications, Development, Policy and Advocacy, and Board Engagement teams to drive revenue growth from institutional partners across the public and private sectors as part of Partners In Healthโs (PIH) overall annual fundraising goal. This person will create and execute a strategic vision for growth in institutional fundraising and more robust engagement with other forms of value potential arising out of institutional partnerships, such as brand awareness, policy, influence, and thought leadership. By cultivating and stewarding relationships with foundations, corporations, and bilateral and multilateral partners, the Managing Director will oversee and build an integrated program of multifaceted institutional support for PIHโs strategic priorities around the world.
This role will serve as a thought leader and will drive organizational conversations around restricted funding strategy development and capacity building in alignment with our organizational goal of democratizing and decentralizing strategic planning and programming.
Responsibilities
Strategy (25%)
- Articulate a long-term vision for growth and develop and execute a comprehensive strategy to achieve this growth in both private and public sector partnership revenue.
- Identify core competencies and strategic growth areas for organizational investment, inclusive of thought leadership opportunities through engagement in conferences and events, which will unlock new revenue streams and increase engagement with private and public sector donors. Create compelling and legible business cases for such investments. Be a lead driver for such organizational changes.
- Work with the Chief Marketing & Communications Officer to develop distinct, brand-aligned, multi-channel, public-facing voice compelling to institutional audiences.
- Analyze care delivery site resource mobilization and management capacity and lead on building capacity at care delivery and academic sites related to the full scope of private and public sector stewardship from project design and strategy development to piloting innovation and long-term coverage of new costs.
Fundraising (50%)
- Oversee the overall performance of, and communications with, PIHโs public and private sector portfolio.
- Directly manage a select portfolio of high-level donors and prospects among corporate, foundation, and public sector funders.
- Lead in growing relationships and connections of PIH senior leadership team members with existing and new strategic institutional partners, both at global and country levels.
- Lead in the stewardship and diversification of PIHโs institutional partnerships portfolio; with support from the Prospect Management & Research team, lead the prospecting and management for new institutional partners, ensuring compatibility with PIH ethos and compliance with the PIH Gift Acceptance Committee guidance.
- Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer, the Board Engagement Team, and other internal stakeholders to identify creative ways to leverage the organizationโs relationships and close transformational gifts across revenue streams.
- Collaborate with Award Management, Grant and Compliance, Legal, Contracts, Procurement and other relevant teams within PIH to ensure strong ability to manage existing grants, track and develop internal reporting systems, write key stewardship reports, maintain excellent historical records, to ensure each project or program is meeting the expectations of the proposal.
Management (25%)
- Manage a team of fundraisers and support staff, including 2 senior director direct reports. Set ambitious yet achievable goals, and ensure accountability and transparency mechanisms to enable ongoing, data-driven performance management.
- Oversee the private and public sector annual revenue projections, target setting and progress reporting structures, and operating budgets in close partnership with senior directors of each respective fundraising stream.
- Lead in developing multi-year revenue projections and yearly forecasts across foundations, corporate, and public sector revenue streams, in collaboration with finance and development department leads.
- Create a culture of trust and collaboration within the Institutional Partnerships team. Coach, and mentor staff, integrating professional development and equity, diversity, and inclusion goals into the overall team workflow.
Qualifications
- 15+ years of experience in institutional partnership management and resource mobilization.
- Bachelor degree required and Master degree preferred in relevant field.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, strategic planning, people management, portfolio management, proposal development, and rights-based program design.
- Experience with university and research fundraising a plus.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships across and outside of the organization.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in foundation, corporate and public sector funding.
- Strong strategic vision and demonstrated success in stewarding change management.
- Strong emotional intelligence and strategic thinking skills.
- Experience in working collaboratively across multiple departments and high-level stakeholders.
- Exceptional diplomacy skills and superior attention to detail.
- Discretion and ability to manage confidential information appropriately.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
