Work LocationNairobi Expected duration6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesAbout UN-Habitat UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation. The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the tools and methodology production center of the UN-Habitat that develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through communities of urban practices and is the operational level responsible to undertake technical cooperation projects, such as the construction of water and sanitation facilities, shelter and other work. The Planning, Finance & Economy Section (PFES) is responsible to support urban and territorial planning at all scales including through the development of planning policy, norms and guidelines, urban design and public space design, urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance), and local economic development. 1. REPORTING AND COMMUNICATION The Urban Economy Consultant will be hired to collaborate closely with the Finance and Economy team of PFES. He/she will be reporting to the team lead on Finance and Economy. 2. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the overall supervision of the Programme Lead on Finance and Economy, the consultant will be responsible for a variety of duties, including but not limited to one or more of the below: โ€ข Designing and implementing the research methodology for the study on pricing of fees for services in Nairobi Countyโ€™s markets. โ€ข Developing survey tools, data collection instruments, and research protocols for both quantitative and qualitative components. โ€ข Coordinating and overseeing field data collection in collaboration with the County research team, ensuring adherence to ethical standards and data quality protocols. โ€ข Conducting literature review and data analysis on market pricing. โ€ข Preparing draft and final analytical papers and presentations on the studyโ€™s details, progress, and findings, including recommendations for improved pricing models and policy implications. โ€ข Providing technical and administrative support to the Finance and Economy Team and representing UN-Habitat in coordination meetings with County counterparts and project partners. โ€ข Conducting research on the finance and economy needs of other PFES teams and identifying possible entry points. โ€ข Developing concept notes on potential collaborative projects between Finance and Economy and other teams in the section. โ€ข Providing technical input on finance and economy issues to other ongoing projects within the section and UN-Habitat as a whole. Qualifications/special skillsAcademic Qualification; โ€ข Masterโ€™s degree in Economics, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Public Finance, or related field is required. Work Experience; โ€ข Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in field research, local economic development, public finance, or urban governance research is required. โ€ข Prior experience working in developing countries and/or with local governments is highly desirable. โ€ข Prior research related work in Kenya is strongly desired. Languagesโ€ข Written and verbal fluency in English is required. Fluency in Swahili is highly desirable. Additional InformationNot available.
