Result of ServiceThe consultant will support the ECLAC team and the Escazรบ Agreement Secretariat in the implementation of the project on the Regional Action Plan on Human Rights Defenders in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean, contributing to the following activities: - Draft preliminary agenda notes, minutes and supporting documentation of the ad hoc working group on human rights defenders in environmental matters; - Prepare draft documents for the implementation of the Regional Action Plan on Human Rights Defenders; - Research and update relevant legislation and policies in the Observatory on Principle 10 as the clearinghouse of the Escazรบ Agreement; - Support the monitoring and reporting keeping track of the implementation of the Regional Action Plan on Human Rigts Defenders; - Support the development of resources and materials to raise awareness and build capacities on article 9 of the Escazรบ Agreement and the Regional Action Plan. Work LocationRemote Expected duration10 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnder the supervision of the responsible officer, the consultant will substantively support the implementation of the Regional Action Plan on Human Rights Defenders in Environmental Matters by performing the following tasks: - Supporting the ad hoc working group on human rights defenders in environmental matters; - Undertaking awareness-raising and public engagement efforts regarding the implementation of the Regional Action Plan and article 9 of the Escazรบ Agreement; - Conduct legal research and analysis on issues related to human rights defenders in environmental matters; - Review and analyze legal texts, national legislation, judicial decisions, international instruments, and other related materials, with a view to identifying trends, challenges, and good practices relevant to human rights defenders in environmental matters; - Prepare studies, technical briefs, background notes, and draft reports or concept papers as required; - Draft and contribute to technical documents and internal memoranda in support of the project and the Secretariat; - Support the organization and logistical coordination of events, consultations, and meetings convened on human rights defenders in environmental matters; - Perform any other tasks related to the implementation of the project, as requested. Qualifications/special skillsThe consultant must hold a first-level university degree in law and an advanced university degree (Masterโs degree or equivalent) in law, sustainability, or a related field. The consultant shall have at least 15 years of relevant experience in the area of environmental law and policy. Experience in the United Nations system and the Escazรบ Agreement is desirable. LanguagesThe consultant needs to be fluent in written and spoken Spanish and have an advanced level in written and spoken English. Additional InformationNot available.
