Internships
The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).
ย
The purpose of the programme is:
- To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;
- To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.
- The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.
ย
Organizational Settingย
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, \"Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection\". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.
The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture assists Member States of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the IAEA in using nuclear techniques and related technologies to improve food security, alleviate poverty and promote sustainable agriculture. The Joint Centre consists of five Sections, each with an associated laboratory (located in Seibersdorf, 45 km south-east of Vienna), in the areas of: animal production and health; plant breeding and genetics; insect pest control; soil and water management and crop nutrition; and food and environmental protection.
The Animal Production and Health Section and Laboratory assist Member States in improving livestock productivity through the efficient use of locally available feed resources, reproduction and breeding practices, and disease diagnostic tools and control measures.
ย
Main Purpose
To provide technical expertise in the development of a prototype for a web application that digitalizes national veterinary procedures, including its front and backend. The prototype should include IT modules for: i) animal census; ii) design of national disease monitoring and action plans for the national animal populations; iii) field sampling module, iv) laboratory module; v) reporting module for epidemiological overview of the diseases and vi) outbreak management module. The IT module should contain tabular and geographical (GIS) visualizations for all above mentioned six modules, as well as a comprehensive reporting system for situation analysis and decision making. For the designated field operators, the prototype should have appropriate Web, as well as mobile applications, such as Android and Apple devices.
ย
Functions / Key Results Expected
- Support the development of workflows that caters to end-users and encompasses various tasks related to the modules mentioned in the paragraph \"Main Purpose\".
- Support the development of a scalable backend database for the storage of the data and the establishment of the relations between the data, ensuring data integrity, accuracy and consistency, in line with the IAEA IT standards.
- Support the development and implementation of scalable, maintainable services and APIs.
ย
Qualifications and Experience
- University Degree in Computer Engineering
- Work experience in database design and development (e.g., SQL, PostgreSQL).
- Experience in frontend development (e.g., Typescript, JavaScript, React JS, Vue JS, etc.).
- Understanding of data structures and algorithms.
- Knowledge of Azure Cloud Computing Services is desirable (e.g., SQL database, Azure Cosmos, App Service).
- Experience in data visualization and reporting, especially GIS, is desirable.
- Understanding of web development principles, encompassing both frontend (user interface) and backend (server-side logic) concepts.
- Familiarity with database management, including both relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non-relational (e.g., MongoDB) databases.
- Working knowledge of JavaScript, with specific experience or strong interest in Node.js and the Express.js framework for building server-side applications.
