About the Positionย
WorldFish is seeking to engage two (02) interns to support the Aquatic Animal Genetics Team in Penang, Malaysia. The interns will support activities under the Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) Genetic Improvement and Dissemination Program, which include\u2014but are not limited to\u2014fish production, dissemination of GIFT, and laboratory-based genetic and GIFT health surveillance work. The candidates will work as part of an interdisciplinary team with expertise in quantitative genetics, molecular biology, aquaculture systems, aquatic animal health, and dissemination programs.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in research activities at WorldFish Penang Headquarters that are related to the Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) of the Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) strain.Support sampling activities for genetic and health surveillance programs.Assist in molecular laboratory work (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR/qPCR preparation, gel electrophoresis, data recording) as needed.Assist in the organization and maintenance of laboratory and field records, including inventory and sample tracking.Assist in maintaining proper hygiene and biosecurity practices at the facility.Contribute to routine reporting and documentation of activities.Write and submit a short report summarizing the work conducted during the internship period.Carry out any other tasks to support the Aquatic Animal Genetics Team and its partners.Requirements

The candidate will either have obtained or currently be working towards obtaining a Bachelor of Science or higher degree in Aquaculture or related field.Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.Strong organizational skills.Knowledge and practical ability to work with live fish.Basic understanding of fish breeding and hatchery technology is an advantage.Ability to record, organize, and enter data accurately (e.g., Excel or similar tools).Able to work effectively in a team with good interpersonal and communication skills.Willingness to work in both laboratory and hatchery environments, sometimes under field conditions.Benefits

The successful interns will be based at WorldFish Headquarters in Penang, Malaysia. The internship is scheduled to commence in March 2026 and will run for a duration of up to 5\u00bd months.
