Work LocationNew York Expected durationMaximum 6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system to enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the security programmes and activities of the United Nations System. This internship opportunity is located in the Protection Coordination Unit (PCU) within the Division of Partnerships and Specialized Support, UNDSS. The internship is for a period of three to six months, depending on the needs of the Department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the PCU. This internship is designed to be conducted in person but can be adapted to accommodate remote/hybrid arrangements and/or part-time arrangements (20 hours per week) on an exceptional basis. Responsibilities Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Chief of the Protection Coordination Unit (PCU), the intern will play a key role in supporting the unitโ€™s research, document management, operational coordination, and communication activities. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to apply advanced skills in data management, project coordination, and communications while contributing to the PCUโ€™s mission of ensuring the protection of Senior United Nations Officials and other UN personnel. The internโ€™s contributions will directly support the efficient and effective functioning of the PCU and its global operations.As part of the PCU, the intern is expected to undertake the following duties: 1. Document Review & Research o Support the review of internal documents and organize online resources for the PCUโ€™s SharePoint platform, contributing to a well-maintained knowledge repository. o Conduct research on global security trends, emerging threats, and protection technologies, synthesizing relevant information to prepare background documents and presentations. 2. Webinars and Training Support o Assist in the planning, coordination, and production of Personal Protection Services (PPS) webinars and virtual training events, including managing recordings, participant logistics, and interaction facilitation. o Contribute to the development of digital learning resources and assist with managing townhalls and virtual training environments. 3. Meeting and Partner Coordination o Assist in preparing for and organizing meetings with key internal and external partners, including drafting agendas, preparing briefing notes, and scheduling. o Participate in virtual meetings, taking notes, tracking action points, and contributing to discussions on PCUโ€™s operations and protection initiatives. 4. Data Entry and Database Management o Enter and update data in PCUโ€™s databases related to training, certification, and personnel management, ensuring the accuracy of records. o Help maintain up-to-date records on PCU operations and protection activities, using advanced data management and verification processes. 5. Content Development & Reporting o Assist in drafting, editing, and finalizing reports, presentations, and other documentation for internal and external use. o Contribute to the preparation of research papers, operational briefs, and policy guidelines by providing well-structured, data-backed insights. 6. Communication & Dissemination o Draft clear, concise, and accurate communication materials, such as emails, briefing documents, and presentations for a variety of stakeholders. o Assist in disseminating meeting notes, reports, and other key materials to relevant internal and external partners. 7. Special Projects and Surge Support o Support ad-hoc special projects, such as research into the inclusion of female Close Protection Officers, assisting with the development of training materials, or providing operational surge support to field operations. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: The applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements with coursework in Data Management, Project Management, and Data Visualization.: โ€ข Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (secondary university degree or equivalent, or higher); or โ€ข Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) โ€ข Proficient in standard computer software applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite with advanced expertise in Excel for data management and analysis. โ€ข Strong expertise in research, data analysis, and business modeling, utilizing various tools. โ€ข Demonstrated skills in drafting reports, writing briefs, and managing communications with clients or stakeholders. โ€ข Ability to lead projects and coordinate events remotely, with a focus on data-driven insights and efficient project execution. โ€ข Willingness to engage with and understand differing opinions, demonstrating tolerance and open-mindedness. โ€ข Keen interest in the work of the United Nations, with a personal commitment to the ideals and values of the UN Charter. โ€ข Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and respectful working environment. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship. Additionally, all interns must adhere to the following: โ€ข A person who is the child or sibling of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations. An applicant who bears to a staff member any other family relationship may be engaged as an intern, provided that he or she shall not be assigned to the same work unit of the staff member nor placed under the direct or indirect supervision of the staff member. For purposes of this instruction, \"child\" means (i) the child of a staff member; (ii) the child of the spouse of a staff member (stepchild); and (iii) the spouse of a child of a staff member or a staff member's spouse (son- or daughter-in-law). \"Sibling\" includes the child of both or either parent of a staff member and the child. โ€ข Observe of all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of the Organization notwithstanding their status as described in section 4 of the UN Internship Programme Administrative Instructions ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11. โ€ข Provide the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship.
