Traditional biomass represents approximately 15 per cent of total global energy use and helps meeting the cooking needs of approximately 2.1 billion people. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimated that replacing traditional open fires with Improved Cookstoves (ICS) has a global mitigation potential between 0.6 and 2.4 giga tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, while delivering a wide range of sustainable development benefits.
The Promotion of Climate-Friendly Cooking: Kenya and Senegal project which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF) is accelerating the growth of the ICS sector with an irreversible market transformation that will significantly increase the level of ICS production and sales, particularly in more remote and rural locations, thereby enabling the two project countries, Kenya and Senegal, to significantly advance the achievement of their stated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) goals. In 2025/2026 the project is closing and several closing events will be organised to share knowledge and learnings and to provide a platform for project stakeholders to celebrate the success of the project.
