ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mission of UNIDO, as described in the Lima Declaration adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013 as well as the Abu Dhabi Declaration adopted at the eighteenth session of UNIDO General Conference in 2019, is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States. The relevance of ISID as an integrated approach to all three pillars of sustainable development is recognized by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will frame United Nations and country efforts towards sustainable development. UNIDOโs mandate is fully recognized in SDG-9, which calls to โBuild resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovationโ. The relevance of ISID, however, applies in greater or lesser extent to all SDGs. Accordingly, the Organizationโs programmatic focus is structured in four strategic priorities: Creating shared prosperity; Advancing economic competitiveness; Safeguarding the environment; and Strengthening knowledge and institutions.
Each of these programmatic fields of activity contains a number of individual programmes, which are implemented in a holistic manner to achieve effective outcomes and impacts through UNIDOโs four enabling functions: (i) technical cooperation; (ii) analytical and research functions and policy advisory services; (iii) normative functions and standards and quality-related activities; and (iv) convening and partnerships for knowledge transfer, networking and industrial cooperation. Such core functions are carried out in Divisions/Offices in its Headquarters, Regional Offices and Hubs and Country Offices.
The Directorate of Directorate of Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development (TCS) under the overall direction of the Director General, and in close collaboration with all relevant organizational entities within UNIDO, the Directorate of Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development (TCS), headed by a Managing Director, ensures the Organization's application of strategies and interventions for sustainable industrial development related to environment, energy, Micro, Small and Medium-Enterprises (MSMEs), and digitalization. The Directorate also oversees the Organization's normative contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through industrial policy advice and capacity development. Through coordination in-house and with Member States and industry stakeholders, it ensures that the services provided in these areas contribute to effective and appropriate technical, business and policy solutions and are focused on results, scaling up and positioning UNIDO as a leading platform for industrial development in developing countries and global fora.
The Directorate is responsible for the Division of Industrial Policy Advice and Capacity Development (TCS/IPC), and technical Divisions of Circular Economy and Green Industry (TCS/CEG), Energy and Climate Action (TCS/ECA), Climate Innovation and Montreal Protocol (TCS/CMP); MSME Competitiveness, Quality and Job Creation (TCS/SME); and Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence (TCS/DAI). Leveraging the diverse skill sets of UNIDO personnel and the services provided by the two TC directorates, TCS collaborates closely with IET to develop and implement programmes and projects, aiming at enhancing synergy and complementarity and maximizing UNIDO corporate performance and impacts on the ground. The Directorate also ensures close coordination and collaboration among the Divisions as well as with relevant entities in all Directorates across the Organization.
This internship position is located under the Office of the Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director of the Directorate of Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development (TCS). The Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director plays a pivotal role in supporting the Director General in strategically positioning UNIDO to achieve its organizational priorities. This includes providing strategic advice on the Directorateโs mandate, contributing to the Leadership Board to align with UNIDOโs strategic goals, and monitoring trends to propose innovative solutions. The Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director ensures the development of gender-responsive strategies and impact-oriented technical cooperation (TC) programs aligned with results-based management principles. Additionally, the Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director fosters knowledge exchange, strengthens capacity development, and ensures alignment with corporate monitoring, evaluation, and reporting frameworks, while championing gender equality and organizational efficiency.
The duration of an internship at UNIDO is between three to six months, is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work under the supervision of a staff member, in the department or office that they are assigned to. Interns shall cover all costs associated with their internship, including visa, travel to and from the duty station, insurance, transportation, accommodation and living expenses.
GENERIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Intern shall work under the direct supervision of an officer designated by the Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director and shall be engaged, as follows:
- Exposed to the regular core functions of the Directorate and as such shall have the opportunity to observe the day-to-day operations and engage in on-the-job training in specific actions delegated by the Supervisor.
- Engaged in a specific self-contained assignment described below:
- Gather and organize information relevant to the Directorateโs areas of focus, identifying common information gaps and consolidating inputs from various internal Divisions and Units
- Assist in the preparation of correspondence materials, bullet points, notes, summaries, and other information materials based on the guidance provided by the Office of the Managing Director.
- Participate in and/or assist in the preparation of meetings with various internal and external stakeholders, as requested by the Office of the Managing Director. Support the drafting of minutes as well as the preparation of follow-up actions deriving from the meetings, as needed.
- Assist in the coordination of tasks related to the China-Africa-UNIDO Centre of Excellence (CoE), including the preparation and drafting of meeting minutes, and documents such as briefing notes (BN) and Interoffice Memorandums (IOMs), as required.
- Assist in documenting and following up for meetings related to the China-Africa-UNIDO CoE, ensuring accurate reporting and communication with relevant stakeholders.
- Observe internal and external coordination mechanisms with different Divisions and Units. Assist in the overall harmonisation of tasks within the Office of the Managing Director through research and analytical efforts, as relevant.
- Support the knowledge management function of the Directorate and contribute to the corporate communications efforts, as required.
- Undertake other related assignments, as required by the Office of the Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director.
- Other Special emerging Projects that may enhance the learning experience of the Intern.
The Intern will be required to prepare an end-of-internship report, which will be submitted to and cleared by UNIDO Internship Coordination.
MINIMUM ORGANIZATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Age: Minimum 20 years on the first day of the internship.
Education: Enrolled in a university degree programme; or begin the internship within one year of completing a university degree; or completed a university degree and be sponsored as part of an academic or development programme.
Field of specialization: social or human sciences, including economics, global and political studies, public management, international business, development frameworks, international relations, or other fields relevant to UNIDOโs mandate.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Other skills: proven experience in international settings, excellent written and verbal communication in English, solid understanding of the UN system, and strong teamwork abilities.
