Work LocationEntebbe Expected durationSix (06) months Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganizational setting and Reporting: The Department of Operational Support (DOS) was established to provide end-to-end operational support, advisory services and other solutions to operating entities across the Secretariat, including departments, offices away from headquarters, peace operations, and regional commissions. The Regional Service Centre in Entebbe, Uganda (RSCE), was established in July 2010, following the adoption of General Assembly resolution 64/269. The Centre provides efficient, client-oriented and scalable services to its client entities. This includes transactional elements of human resources, finance, multimodal movement and control, personnel and cargo transport and information and communications technology (ICT) support. In addition to these services, the Office of the Director RSCE and support offices through the Deputy Director RSCE provides overall guidance on the operations of the RSCE including strategic planning, communication, budgeting, human resources management, property management, quality assurance and business intelligence, conference services, record keeping and archive management, and audit response and risk management. For more information, please visit https://rsce.unmissions.org. These positions are in the Regional Field Technology Service (RFTS) at the Regional Service Centre Entebbe (RSCE). The incumbents will report to the Supervisor of the ICT Operations Unit of the Regional Field Technology Service. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the supervision of the ICT Officer / Network Engineer, the IC/ IT Technicians will be responsible for the following duties. Structured Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Cabling: The contractor will perform installation, testing, labelling, documentation, and maintenance of structured cabling systems to support voice and data communication infrastructure. This includes copper (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6a) and fibre optic cabling. This may comprise the following, but is not limited to: 1. Installation and Termination -Install and terminate copper and fiber optic cables according to international standards (TIA/EIA-568, ISO/IEC 11801). -Mount wall outlets, patch panels, fiber enclosures, and network racks. 2. Cable Management -Route and secure cables through trays, conduits, and risers. -Perform cable dressing and labeling per organization standards. 3. Testing and Certification -Use certified tools to test installed cabling systems (Fluke tester or equivalent). -Provide cable certification reports as part of handover documentation. 4. Documentation -Produce As-Built drawings and diagrams (using Visio or CAD). -Update cabling records, patch panel maps, and asset inventory. 5. Maintenance and Troubleshooting -Diagnose and repair faults in cabling infrastructure. -Perform routine inspections and provide preventive maintenance. 6. Coordination -Liaise with building managers, contractors, and ICT colleagues. -Ensure compliance with health and safety standards and regulations. โข Design and install buildingsโ telecommunications infrastructure for voice, data and video systems. โข Execute work on LAN wiring (voice and data) projects and tasks that involve internal structured cabling and fibre optic splicing and connectivity. โข Install polyvinyl chloride (PVC) trunking, voice, and data outlets, boxes, and faceplates, and perform finishing work, including identification, testing, and labelling. โข Cable management and labelling of patch cords in the racks and at users' workstations. โข Perform routine maintenance on voice and data outlets and boxes. โข Troubleshoot, isolate, and repair damaged or cut fibre ring cables and uplinks. Grounding, Bonding, and Lightning Protection. โข Periodically taking resistance measurements and keeping records of all grounding installations at the UN campus base and remote sites, and confirming if they are within the acceptable grounding resistance of Qualifications/special skillsHigh School Diploma or equivalent is required. At least one (1) year of experience in ICT infrastructure is required. Hands-on experience, with working knowledge of structured ICT cabling, optical fibre splicing, grounding, bonding, and lightning protection, or other related fields, is required. Skill/knowledge to use an optical fibre splicing machine and other local area network (LAN) installation tools is required. Familiarity with using the Microsoft 365 productivity suite and office equipment to facilitate documentation of the tasks and reports is desirable. Experience working in the United Nations Peacekeeping field operations or similar International Organisations environment is desirable. A Technical certification in ICT, Electrical Engineering, or related fields is desirable. A valid rigger's certificate is desirable. Practical training or completion of a vocational skills development programme through a vocational training institution is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
