Overseeing and supporting scientific work for a wide range of topics, including climate change, fisheries, energy provision, protected areas, and governance, you will have a key role in ensuring that cutting-edge science forms the basis of dynamic ecosystem-based marine management in the North Atlantic and beyond.
The orgaโโnization
ICES is an intergovernmental marine science organization with 20 member countries located around the North Atlantic.
Our mission is to advance and share scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and the services they provide and to use this knowledge to generate state-of-the-art evidence-based advice to meet conservation, management, and sustainability goals. Our Strategicโ Plan defines our direction and priorities which are further articulated in our Scโiโenceโ and Advisory plansโ.
ICES works collaboratively, using our broad and dynamic international network of approximately 6,000 scientists from over 700 marine institutes, to generate and share the data, knowledge, and advice that society needs.
The Science Committee (SCICOM) oversees all scientific work of ICES and is composed of representatives from each Member Country, as well as steering group and strategic initiative chairs. The Chair leads the Science Committee's work, in close collaboration with Steering Group chairs and functions across all parts of the organization, including the 150+ scientific expert groups, the Advisory Committee, the Data and Information Group, the Secretariat, ICES executive board (Bureau), and the governing board of ICES (Council). The Chair is supported by but works independently from the Secretariat. The most recent Science Committee report provides details of the wide range of activities occurring in ICES scientific network.
Theโ role
As the Science Committee Chair, you will lead and develop ICES Science, motivate the international scientific network, and promote our role as a knowledge provider in the North Atlantic and beyond. The work environment is challenging, dynamic, and fulfilling as we work together to advance marine science, advice and management.
The Chair will work actively to strengthen the role and impact of ICES as a knowledge provider through engagement with the ICES community and international partner organizations. The Chair is expected to track and facilitate the implementation of the ICES Science strategy, meeting the mission of ICES. In addition, the Chair will work to develop ICES science and the capacity of our scientific expert network to meet current and future societal knowledge needs across a wide range of topics in a dynamic social and ecological environment.
The Chair will work to ensure further integration of ICES science into the ICES advisory process, enhancing scientific contributions to integrated advice. This includes engaging with ICES bodies and various expert groups, diverse stakeholders from outside ICES and promoting ICES science and services to a broad and global audience.
The Chair shall work to engage and involve the ICES community in international processes, aiming to share our knowledge, and contribute to the advancement of the scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and the services they provide, as well as representing ICES at relevant scientific events.
The Chair is expected to work effectively and cooperatively with the leadership of the ICES Secretariat (General Secretary, line managers). The Chair will be committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion and contribute to the implementation of our gender equality plan to create an inclusive and innovative scientific community.

You are an internationally recognized and respected scholar within marine science and social-ecological systems, with a broad understanding of the key topics of ICES Science Plan and capacity to identify and meet scientific development needs.You have the ability to develop the organization's scientific strategy and vision and can identify and implement novel approaches and solutions to address complex challenges, anticipating emerging trends and developing long-term plans.You have demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to engage and motivate a large network of experts. Terms of appoinโtment
The appointment will be full-time (38 hours per week) for a period of three years, with the possibility of a three-year extension. The position is based at ICES Headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark.
ICES Secretariat staff enjoy privileges and immunities pursuant to the Host Agreement between the Government of Denmark and ICES. The salary for this role is situated at the โP5\" grade which is exempt from Danish income tax and is based on, but not identical to, the United Nations common salary system. A tax-free pension scheme as well as group supplemental insurance plan is available.

Shortlisted candidates may be asked to give an oral presentation for representatives of member countries on their ideas and vision for the SCICOM Chair position.
In-person interviews for shortlisted candidates are planned for 30โ31 January 2024.
The Council will provide a final approval of the recruitment panel's recommendation.
The start date for the position is planned for AprilโJune 2024.โ
