Geographical Information Systems Specialist

Overview The Geographic Information Systems Specialist with a forestry profile will support mapping, landscape monitoring, and spatio-temporal data analysis related to the sustainable management of forest resources.

Duties and responsibilities

Summary of responsibilities

1. Support the design and implementation of the project's Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) activities

2. Identify, collect and analyze relevant geospatial data (satellite images, field data, etc.).

3. Supervise data collection in the field using GPS and other mobile mapping tools.

4. Set up an organized and accessible GIS database

5. Produce thematic maps for reforestation, ANR, agroforestry and participatory forest management activities

6. Produce monitoring maps of forest cover and restored ecosystems

7. Carry out analyses of trends in deforestation, soil degradation, and landscape restoration.

8. Assess the impact of project activities using specific environmental indicators

9. Train local teams and communities in the use of GIS and GPS tools

10. Contribute to capacity building of partners on participatory mapping methods

11. Document and present analysis results in the form of reports, maps and presentationsParticipate in coordination meetings and provide recommendations based on GIS analyses


Education, knowledge and experience Requirements
• Advanced degree (BAC+4 minimum) in forestry, environment, or related field with specialization in GIS and remote sensing.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in the use of GIS in projects related to natural resource management, preferably in a rural or Sahelian environment.
• Proficiency in GIS software (QGIS, ArcGIS, etc.) and remote sensing tools (Google Earth Engine, ENVI, etc.).
• Skills in field data collection and analysis using GPS and mobile applications (e.g. Kobo Collect).
• Solid knowledge of agroforestry, forest management, and landscape restoration.
• Good ability to train and support local teams and communities.
• Proficiency in local languages (e.g. Bambara, Soninke) is an asset.

Terms and conditions • This is a Locally Recruited position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration in local currency commensurate with skills and experience.
• The duty station will be in Kayes/Nioro, Mali CIFOR-ICRAF Offices.
