ย Context
Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental and non-governmental partners. Under the overall supervision of Officer-In-Charge Banjul Country office and under the direct supervision of the National Finance Officer and in close coordination with relevant units at Mission and Administrative Centres, the Finance Assistant will be responsible and accountable for managing the resources management functions in The Gambia in line with IOM policies, standards and commitments.
- Extract and input data from various sources in financial or accounting systems;
- Respond to accounting, budget or financial queries regarding data from staff in the unit and elsewhere;
- Assist in the following up of staff and vendor advances to ensure that they are liquidated on time;
- Review all types of payments starting from purchase to payment requests verifying that they are duly authorized, and all the supporting documents are attached therewith;
- Assist in performing of the bank renconciliation on a monthly basis;
- Verify vendor requests for accuracy and conformance with IOM finance policies and instructions;
- Perform claim verifications against documentation to ensure that purchases/services are properly authorized and that the goods have been received or services rendered;
- Prepare necessary receipt and journal vouchers;
- ย Assist in the preparation of budget, accounting, financial, statistical reports and other reports as required;
- Provide assistance to all staff services such as travel, expense claims, document retrieval, etc.;
- Ensure proper and systematic filling of all posted payments and other accounting documents according to the established standards;
- Responsible for the Petty Cash of the office; and bank transactions
- Perform other related duties as required Education
- Bachelorโs degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finances, or related fieldsย
- High school certificate with two years of relevant professional experience. Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. ย Experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, E-mail, Outlook; previous experience in SAP is a distinct advantage;
- Attention to detail, ability to organize paperwork in a methodical way; ย
- Discreet, details and clients-oriented, patient and willingness to learn new things; and,ย
- Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organization in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage.ย
Skills
- In depth knowledge of the broad range of migration related subject areas dealt with by the Organization; and,
- Knowledge of UN and bilateral donor programming.
- Knowledge of financial rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS).
Languages
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).
Knowledge of French and any local language is an advantage.
