ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The World Food Programme (WFP) has been operational in The Gambia since the 1970s, supporting national efforts to combat food insecurity and malnutrition. Despite agriculture employing 70% of the population, the country produces less than half of its food needs, making it vulnerable to climate shocks and market volatility.
WFPโs work in The Gambia focuses on crisis response, home-grown school feeding, nutrition support, and resilience building. Through partnerships with the Government, WFP provides food and nutrition assistance to vulnerable groups, including children under five, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and communities affected by climate-related disasters. The home-grown school feeding programme, which sources food locally, is the countryโs largest safety net and contributes to improved school attendance, nutrition, and local economic development.
