IOMโs Regional Office for the East, Horn and Southern Africa oversees, plans, coordinates and supports IOM activities within the region. Through a team of specialists, the Regional office is responsible for project review and endorsement and provides technical support to Country Offices in the region which include Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, ย Republic of Mauritius (also covering Seychelles), Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, ย Zambia and Zimbabwe particularly in the area of project development, project implementation, monitoring and evaluation, resource mobilization, resource management, liaison coordination with regional and sub-regional governments, United Nations agencies and other key partners.ย
Under the overall supervision of the Regional Health Assessment Programme Coordinator (RHAPC) and under the direct supervision of the Mobile Team Coordinator, and the technical supervision of theย Regional Nurse Coordinator, the incumbent will be responsible for duties and responsibilities related to Mobile Team in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Mobile unit is tasked to support the RHAPC in implementing pre-immigration medical examination activities in the region, particularly providing mobile missions and surge support to the country offices, capacity-building of medical personnel, and systematic monitoring and evaluation of the Health Assessment Programme in the region.
- Perform daily nursing activities during the mobile missions to fulfil the technical requirements of the resettlement countries in the areas of:-
(a). Medical examinations;ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย i. Such as checking vital signs, weight, height, visual acuity;ย
ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ii. Blood, urine or sputum collection as required;
(b). Imaging;
(c). Laboratory testing;
(d). Vaccinations;
(e). TB management;
(f). Treatment and referrals;
(g). Pre-departure procedures and medical movements;
(h). Documentation, certification and information transmission; and,
(i). Other technical areas as may be required.
2. Provide information and detailed explanations to the migrants and/or refugees in relation to:
- The migration health assessment process; and,
- Treatments and referrals.
3. Ensure proper identification and follow-up by:
- Comprehensive history taking;
- Accurate and thorough Biodata collection;
- Ensuring ID verification for each step of the health assessment process; and,
- Keeping a register of applicants who undergo health investigations and testing.
4. Assist CMHO or CMHN or Senior nurse in conducting orientation session related to nursing activities for new staff members and on-site mentorship to nurse during mobile mission activities.
5. Assist mission in improving staff performance and adherence to the Health Assessment Programmeโs check lists and SOPโs and maintain standard universal precautions during the mobile mission.
6. Verify samples of sputum, blood or others are properly transported to the laboratory or previously designated location.
7. Provide pre and/or post counselling to migrants or refugees on TB or HIV education, prevention and management as appropriate.
8. Support the planning and execution of mobile missions.
9. Assist with pre-departure documents, briefings and preparations as necessary.
10. Perform medical escort duties when required to ensure migrants receive continued care throughout all phases of migration (before departure, during the journey and at the final destination).
11. Maintain collaborative relationships with various partners to facilitate the follow up and relevant information sharing. Partners include internal IOM departments, other health providers, panel physicians, embassies other UN agencies or NGOโs and others as applicable.
12. Collect statistical information and share with the Regional Nurse Coordinator as per pre-set and agreed upon format.
13. Support the coordinationsย with the staff in the Mobile team, the Migrant Health Assessment Centre and IOM country mission when needed.ย
14. Participate in the organization and preparation of the mobile missions and training sessions when required.ย
15. Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Education- Bachelorโs degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited academic institution in Nursing in countries where the Diploma allows to fulfil the full scope of responsibilities defined in PDs.
- A valid license to practice nursing in the country of duty station. Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. ย Experience
- For Bachelor's Degree holder a minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience and for Diploma holder a minimum of five years of relevant clinical experience.
- Excellent technical skills, including in phlebotomy.
- Training or working experience in the areas of Tuberculosis management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, laboratory testing or public health is an advantage.ย
- Knowledge of and experience in clinical nursing.
- Excellent bedside manner.
- Knowledge of principles of preventive care and disease control.
- Knowledge of and experience in implementation of patient safety and infection prevention and control.
- Computer literacy required: MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Access) Skills

Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required.
