Work LocationHome-based Expected duration6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground: Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG/ASG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses, and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. It supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. To accelerate the local level implementation of the Sendai Framework, UNDRR convened โMaking Cities Resilient 2030โ (MCR2030) as a global multi-partner initiative. MCR2030 supports cities to understand local hazards, assess their resilience status, accelerate the development of local DRR strategies, with emphasis on social inclusion and policy coherence between DRR and climate change adaptation for urban resilience and sustainable development, and implement the risk-informed development strategy with support from local, regional, and global partners. Responsibilities: The consultant will be home-based and will be under the supervision of the MCR2030 Regional Coordinator of the Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean. The consultant will perform activities for strengthening the youth engagement in DRR and activities to accelerate inclusive, ender-responsive e intersectional perspective in DRR actions at the local level, through MCR2030 initiative. The activities will include: a. Organize and facilitate the Regional Youth Network for Disaster Risk Reduction Retreat in Panama. b. Elaboration of a post-GP2025 inter-network roadmap proposal. c. Support the implementation of the LGBTQI+ inclusion in DRR advocacy and planning. d. Provide technical support to promote National-Local linkages for DRR in the Americas and the Caribbean and develop Disaster Risk Reduction Action Plans at the local level e. Provide technical assistance to local governments to assess their disaster resilience capacities using MCR2030 tools and its addendums. f. Organize and support the MCR2030 Regional Coordination Committee activities and meetings. g. Provide technical support to state and nonstate partners on gender-responsive considerations in DRR strategies and integrated CCA and DRR policies, programmes and plans. h. Organize and lead MCR2030 virtual Learning Labs and Knowledge Exchange among local governments and sub nationals. i. Support communication efforts to ensure an effective outreach and dissemination of MCR2030 calls, activities, events, products, tools and methodologies along with the participating entities. j. Provide technical support to identify, collect, and share knowledge, good practices and lessons learnt from the implementation activities to support urban resilience and disaster risk reduction at local level in the region. Qualifications/special skillsA first level university degree in Earth Sciences, Disaster Risk Reduction, Geography or a related areas is required. A minimum of four (4) years of professional experience related to urban or disaster risk reduction or stakeholder engagement areas is required. Experience in climate change, sustainable development or related areas is desirable. Experience in stakeholdersโ engagement (youth, women and other Major Groups) and humanitarian aid is desirable. Experience within the United Nations system or any other similar international organization is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in Spanish and English is required.
