5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Program Overview

WRI Indonesia is an independent research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. At WRI Indonesia, we aim to bring innovations in research and business approaches to create the enabling conditions for Indonesia to achieve robust economic growth while respecting environmental and social values. We seek to contribute to accomplishing ambitious sustainable development goals through working with leaders in the public and private sectors and collaborating with civil society organizations to turn big ideas into action.

As Indonesia has set an ambitious climate target to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or sooner, it should be seen as a positive momentum for advancing climate action, and contribute to the global commitment to keep global temperature increase below 1.5ยฐC. In this light, WRI Indonesia seeks to support the country in meeting and beating its climate commitments by implementing low-carbon technological solutions in a successful pilot program for the industrial sector, which is Indonesia's largest emitter of GHG emissions.

Food processing, particularly dairy products, is Indonesia's leading emissions cause. In 2019, food processing outranked most industrial sectors and was named one of the top 6 high emitting industries. On the other hand, pressure for more sustainable products from the markets and investors creates risk for dairy industries in the future. Moreover, the dairy industries face uncertainty in energy, constituting a significant component of the cost of goods, because of the fluctuating nature of fossil fuels. With HSBC under the Climate Solutions Partnership (CSP) Philanthropic Project, we aim to increase farmersโ€™ productivity and reduce their operation costs using renewable energy and energy efficiency for clean heat and electricity in small and medium dairy industries.

The main objective of the Energy Transition project is to reduce emissions in dairy industries through innovative and low-carbon technological intervention, which would yield a double dividend for SMEs and the environment. Other than that, to ensure the continuous utilization of low-carbon technology solutions and their environmental, social and economic benefits, this project also aims to develop the institutional capacity and awareness of the SMEs on sustainable dairy products and renewable energy technologies. On the bigger picture, the implementation lesson learned from this project will be captured to enable further scale-up for new business opportunities and mainstreaming the use of innovative and low-carbon technology for industries to support the achievement of Indonesiaโ€™s net zero emission target. Several key activities will be carried out to accomplish its objectives, such as site visit and assessment, partnering with technology providers, installation of solar PV and electrified heat technologies, expanding outreach and awareness to inspire other businesses, capacity building and training on specific technology for the farmers and operators, project monitoring and documenting, as well as project dissemination.

The Energy Transition project for the dairy industry will be implemented from October 2023 to October 2024 in Kabupaten Bandung, Jawa Barat. This project will benefit KPBS Pangalengan, a well-known cow farmers' cooperative in West Java, which consists of 4,764 farmers with 12,979 cows and four business units as a profit-making arm and to provide services for its members.
