5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe primary role of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is to support country-led efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The work of UNDP in 170 countries around the world is anchored in diverse and effective partnerships, which are vital to our two critical roles at country level: (a) as an integrator across policy, programmatic and organizational silos; and (b) as an operational backbone for the United Nations and other partners. In Syria, UNDP has adopted a highly principled approach to the delivery of its mandate in providing critical support to crisis-affected communities. Acknowledging the sensitivities of the operational context, UNDP’s activities in Syria are further informed by bespoke measures to mainstream a do-no-harm approach based on a thorough context analysis, to ensure effective safeguarding measures are applied across all areas of operation in response to the challenges of the Syrian context.

ContextUNDP Syria, through its Qamishli office, is developing a Social Cohesion Strategy tailored to the unique and complex social fabric of Al-Hasakah governorate. The governorate is home to diverse ethnic and religious subcultures that have historically coexisted through both traditional and modern mechanisms of cohesion. However, the Syrian crisis disrupted these mechanisms, leading to increased fragmentation and intra-community tensions. To ensure the strategy is context-sensitive and responsive, UNDP seeks support from Online Volunteers with strong local understanding and professional experience in social cohesion. Volunteers will have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding and social stability efforts, and will be acknowledged with a certificate of appreciation from Online Volunteers upon successful completion.

Task DescriptionUnder the supervision of the Social Cohesion Officer at UNDP Syria, two Online Volunteers will: - Conduct a structured review of the social, cultural, and ethnic dynamics in Al-Hasakah governorate, with a focus on identifying conflict drivers and cohesion opportunities. - Provide a 3–5 page summary report outlining key sensitivities, rituals, values, and social networks across ethnic and sectarian groups. Analyze the draft Social Cohesion Strategy (if shared), and submit 1–2 pages of feedback on its relevance, inclusion, and risks. Recommend at least 3–5 context-adapted interventions, with emphasis on inclusivity and sustainability. Participate in 1–2 virtual review sessions with the UNDP team to present findings and recommendations.
