Mission and objectivesThe Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts (MYSA) is responsible for the development and implementation of Youth, Sport, and Arts development programmes to facilitate realization of their full potential and contribute to their physical and mental well-being. Following the change of Government on 12th August 2021, Parliament issued a Government Gazette Notice number 1123 in September 2021 which spelled out the mandates of the realigned Ministries including the Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts. The Department of Arts Development was created for the first time as a separate department in the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Arts. Zambia has never had a National Arts Policy in its history and therefore the Arts Sector has not only lacked policy guidance but has also been uncoordinated. This has led to minimal impact of the arts sector and its growth in the country to be stunted. The realignment of the Ministry is envisioned to give the arts sector the needed attention for its transformation to a level to which it could effectively contribute to the Gross Domestic Product of the country meaningfully.
ContextThe youth of Zambia have played a pivotal role in the nation's journey, from the pre- independence to the present day, significantly influencing its development. Their contributions were especially notable during the journey towards independence, where youth in Zambia actively participated in the political liberation movement. In recognition of their contribution, Zambia observes Youth Day on March 12th each year, a tradition that began in 1966. This day seeks to honour the initiative and agency of the youth in driving independence and liberating the country from colonial occupation. It serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Zambian youth and their central role in national development. Youth Day is not only a day of remembrance but also an opportunity for todayโs youth to engage in a series of activities leading up to the celebrations. These activities aim to inspire and involve the youth in discussions and activities around national development, further emphasizing their crucial role in shaping Zambia's future. Building on this historical context, the 2025 National Youth Week in Zambia, organized by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and its partners, seeks to continue the tradition of recognizing youth involvement by encouraging their active engagement in development initiatives and activities. Under the theme \"Voices amplified; Innovation ignited\", theme highlights the importance of empowering young people to express their ideas, opinions, and creativity while fostering unity and inclusivity. It emphasizes two key aspects: Voice Amplified: underscores the importance of empowering young people to express themselves, share their ideas, and contribute to meaningful conversations. It emphasizes inclusion and the value of diverse perspectives in creating positive change. Innovation Ignited: reflects the energy and creativity of youth in developing fresh ideas and solutions to address challenges and create opportunities for a better world. It recognizes the innovative spirit that drives progress in various fields, from technology to social initiatives. The 2025 National Youth Indaba is designed to be a pivotal gathering where the youth can engage in deep discussions with the President and national leaders on critical issues affecting them and the nation at large. The Youth Indaba serves as a platform for dialogue between the youth, government officials, civil society, and other stakeholders, aiming to foster mutual understanding and collaborative problem-solving. It is a space where young voices can be heard, contributing their perspectives, innovations, and solutions to Zambia's developmental challenges. The inclusion of the Youth Indaba in the National Youth Week's activities underscores the national commitment to empowering youth by providing them with opportunities to influence policy, share insights, and actively participate in shaping their country's future.
