The TeamThe FP&A team is responsible for optimizing portfolios to achieve foundation goals, engaging with partners and grantees, and identifying and analyzing grants to maximize foundation impact.
โข Portfolio Management: Optimize finite resources across portfolios to achieve foundation goals using a fluid capital market approach to fund priorities.
โข Partners and Grantees: Engage in coordinated strategic and business analysis across funders and institutions with shared strategic objectives and strengthen partners to improve their capacity to execute.
โข Grants: Assess value for money, identify and mitigate risk, and provide financial analysis in order to improve grant impact.
Your Role
The Deputy Director (DD) works closely with their divisions, the leaders, and specialists within the program strategy teams (PSTs) to support grant-making, pipeline management, strategic financial planning, forecasting and larger cross-organizational initiatives. This role will involve a balance of relationship management, people management, direct program team support, as well as thought-partnership to divisional leadership. The DD will lead a team of Finance staff who support their PSTs and be responsible for providing leadership and managing the team's portfolio of projects, quality of deliverables and important decisions.
This role will oversee the programmatic annual planning process. It will also develop and deliver a strategy to identify, prioritize, and meet information needs for program and operational staff, related to financial and grant data within the divisions and teams they support. This role also manages resource allocation to various projects and directs work activities.
This position supports the grant and investment strategy for the Global Policy & Advocacy division at the foundation. The mission of the Global Policy & Advocacy (GPA) division is to understand and shape the public policy debates affecting the foundation's work, build support for its major program and policy objectives, and develop partnerships and alliances that can advance the foundation's objectives nationally and globally. Because the foundation's resources alone are not enough to solve the challenges ahead, GPA also supports advocacy efforts to engage diverse partners and promote innovative solutions that advance our program goals. GPA works in close partnership with grantees, colleagues in the Global Health, Global Development, Global Growth & Opportunity, U.S. and Gender Equality programs and Foundation Communications to build the environment in which all people have the opportunity to lead healthy and productive lives.
What You'll Do
- In partnership with division leadership and alongside the Program Chief Financial Officer (PCFO), this role leads the program forecasting, current year budget management and planning process, and partners closely to design and execute the annual planning process for each division; ensuring that program deliverables conform to overall foundation needs.
- Acts as financial advisor, providing financial and business expertise on their portfolios and key grant transactions. Partners with the PCFO to build and maintain strong relationships in a complex and dynamic environment with program leadership, as both a thought partner and collaborator.
- Leads the financial structuring of large and strategic grants, working closely with internal specialists (Program Officers and their FP&A team) and external partners (grantees) to negotiate and structure transactions that maximize impact. This may include partner organization due diligence.
- Advises on organizational effectiveness topics relative to critical foundation partners.
- Directly responsible for recruitment, retention and people management of Senior Finance Managers, Finance Managers and/or Associates that provide financial support to the PSTs within a division. Communicates and manages performance expectations including goal alignment, giving, and seeking feedback, providing coaching, measuring progress, and holding people accountable. Cultivates team culture, by supporting employee development and recognizing achievement and lessons learned.
- Prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion and acts on these priorities by encouraging diverse, equitable and inclusive practices to build a work environment where everyone can do their best work in contributing towards our impact.
- Leads input to grant portfolio management decisions in support of planning, forecasting and tradeoff decisions across strategies.
- Leads or participates in cross-organizational projects and partners with peer leaders to drive foundation-wide initiatives both internal to finance and in partnership with cross-functional partners (i.e., program teams, business partners, etc.).
- Leads cross-divisional projects to improve efficiencies and processes across FP&A.
- Leads as a subject matter expert on business and financial topics to a variety of partners. Cultivates the sharing of best practices and the evolution of policies across finance and other divisions.
- Responsible for investment reviews, partner engagement and portfolio management.

Education & Experience
- Bachelorโs degree with 15 years of strategic financial analysis and/or planning and leadership experience, or equivalent relevant experience.
- International finance expertise, including exposure to capital and currency markets and blended finance models in developing countries.
- Deep understanding of risk management and organizational due diligence.
Analytical & Technical Skills
- Mastery of analytics, including financial and decision modeling, developing pro forma financial statements, and advanced data analysis.
- Robust quantitative and modeling skills across a variety of business models and transaction types.
Communication & Influence
- Strong written and verbal communication skills tailored to diverse audiences.
- Ability to explain complex financial concepts to leaders, program staff, grantees, and operational partners.
- Professional presence, maturity, and the ability to resolve issues with clarity and diplomacy.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Strong leadership and relationship management skills; team management experience preferred.
- Proven ability to build and sustain trusted relationships across a highly matrixed environment, particularly within GPA, where success depends on connecting across teams and aligning diverse perspectives.
- Demonstrated success working with individuals at all levels, from junior staff to C-level executives.
- Skilled in group problem-solving and collaboration with both internal and external partners.

The salary range for this role is $233,600 to $362,200 USD. We recognize high-wage market differences in Seattle and Washington D.C., where our offices are located. The range for this role in these locations is $254,700 to $394,700 USD. As a mission-driven organization, we strive to balance competitive pay with our mission. New hires salaries are typically between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint. Actual placement in the range will depend on a candidateโs job-related skills, experience, and expertise, as evaluated during the interview process.
