About the Program:

The Global Restoration Initiative (GRI) is a team of nearly 50 experts in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Washington, DC working to accelerate this locally led, globally important movement to restore land in three ways: (1) Inform: Create new data on tree growth and its impacts that provide insights at the global, national and landscape scales (2) Enable: Shift policies and incentives by helping decision makers solve each otherโ€™s challenges (3) Invest: Accelerate projects and businesses and match them with funders to start closing the funding gap. The Data Lab is WRIโ€™s core data innovation and delivery unit. We are a team of over 40 engineers, product managers and data scientists with experience setting data strategy, doing quantitative research, and building data tools and products. Our mission is to use advances in data and technology to help our community improve lives, protect nature, and ensure just transitions.

Job Highlight:

As the Data Science Lead, you will build the team processes, infrastructure, and culture that enable GRIโ€™s data scientists to deliver innovations that improve the mapping and monitoring of restoration globally. You will also work with the Data Lab to ensure these practices and tool scale to support other data science and research teams across the Institute. Your primary responsibilities will include: - Developing and implementing processes to enable the efficient and effective development and scaling of new data science methods. - Designing and implementing data science infrastructure in conjunction with the Data Labโ€™s Head of Engineering and Data Infrastructure Product Manager. - Managing and advising data scientists in the GRI, providing guidance and mentorship to accelerate their work. - Managing and advising data scientists and data operation staff in the Data Labโ€™s core Data Science team to deliver exceptional data science support and tools for WRI programs and International Offices. - Cultivating a team culture that enables effective applied innovation. - Setting and evangelizing practices for data science innovation within GRI and WRI as a whole. You will directly manage data scientist and data operations staff in both the GRI and the Data Lab. You will report to the Global Director of the Data Lab and join the Data Lab Leadership Team alongside the Head of Engineering, Head of Product, and Global Network Lead. You will have a dotted reporting line to the Senior Manager for the GRI.

What will you do:

Design, Implement, and Manage Data Science Processes and Infrastructure (50% of time):

Lead GRIโ€™s data science processes, optimizing and expanding data innovation delivery Set the data science infrastructure strategies for WRI and GRI together with the Heads of Engineering and Data Infrastructure Product Manager Serve as a champion for reproducible tooling and practices and working in partnership with the Data Lab and Research Integrity Teams Advise the GRI and other WRI teams on computational strategies to scale up monitoring work and integrate it with user-facing products including TerraMatch and Global Forest Watch Be the external face of WRIโ€™s data science processes and infrastructure, representing the organization at relevant sector and industry conferences

Mentor and Advise Data Scientists and Analysts (50%):

Manage, mentor, and advise data scientists embedded in GRI and Data Lab, helping them solve technical challenges and build capacity Coach managers of quantitative researchers across WRI to enable them to support the career development of their staff Collaborate with WRIโ€™s Global and Local HR Teams to improve the Data Science Career Path and increase use across the organization Review publications of new methods and findings that leverage new data science methods and provide actionable feedback Build a culture of applied innovation

What will you need:

Education: You have completed at least a Masterโ€™s degree in statistics, computer science, data science, or geography with a preferred focus on forestry, environment, or ecology. Experience: You have 10+ years of work experience including at least 3 in management capacityExperience in designing, building, and managing data science teams in matrixed, global environments Deep knowledge of computational infrastructure for geospatial data science including major cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure), geospatial analysis platforms (Earth Engine, SageMaker, Planetary Computer), code management and deployment tools and concepts including GitHub, containerization and serverless frameworks Experience managing data scientists from diverse technical backgrounds Expertise using remote sensing and machine learning and associated cloud platforms to deliver insights at scale Fluency in complex change management in matrixed, global organizations Experience providing strategic advice and counsel to executives and program leaders Experience reviewing data science research products for journals, national agencies or non-profit organizations Experience building and managing research partnerships to develop novel insights and data products Experience working across data science, product, and engineering teams Languages: You have verbal and written proficiency in English required and additional fluency on a language spoken in WRI Offices encouraged (e.g. Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese) Requirements: Existing work authorization is required where this position is based. Potential Salary:
Salary range for the position is between 139,000 USD to 167,000 USD. WRI offers a competitive remuneration and benefits package.
