Program Overview
The World Resources Institute (WRI) is a global, independent research organization transforming big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. WRI Indonesia, an affiliate of WRI Global, collaborates with various stakeholders to promote policies and practices that are both sustainable and economically beneficial. Energy is one of WRI Indonesiaโs five key focus areas, driven through the Energy and Sustainable Business (ESB) program.
Over the past few years, our ESB program has expanded its focus to cover both energy transition and industrial decarbonization. This broader focus is driven by the urgent need to reduce our industrial emissions, which account for 34% of Indonesiaโs total emissions or 74.5% if we include the indirect emissions contribution. Successfully decarbonizing the industrial sector is critical for achieving national emission reduction targets and boosting the competitiveness of industries that are vital to our economic development.
In carrying out its mission, the ESB team aspires to create transformative business models and a supportive ecosystem that enables net-zero business through research, tools, climate solutions development, and science-aligned policy. To realize this mission and aspiration, the ESBโs engagement team acts as the frontline for the key stakeholdersโ involvement, from the government, private sector, business associations, technology providers, financial institutions, and other think tank partners.
To effectively engage the private sector, the ESB team has been actively supporting the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) in advancing the industrial net zero strategy by establishing the KADIN Net Zero Hub (NZH) since 2020. This initiative has attracted more than 80 companies to embark on their net-zero journey by starting their GHG emission inventory and committing to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In addition, WRI Indonesia also leads the Clean Energy Investment Accelerator (CEIA), an innovative public-private partnership with more than 55 member companies, aimed at addressing barriers to scaling clean energy deployment in emerging markets. The presence of these two platforms has enabled the ESB team to develop robust research that incorporates demand-side insights, ensuring that the recommendations provided reflect market needs accurately.
