Mission and objectivesUNESCO's founding mission, which was shaped by the events of World War II, is to advance peace, sustainable development and human rights by facilitating collaboration and dialogue among nations.[It pursues this objective through five major programme areas: education, natural sciences, social/human sciences, culture and communication/information. UNESCO sponsors projects that improve literacy, provide technical training and education, advance science, protect independent media and press freedom, preserve regional and cultural history, and promote cultural diversity. UNESCO assists in the translation and dissemination of world literature, helps establish and secure World Heritage Sites of cultural and natural importance, works to bridge the worldwide digital divide, and creates inclusive knowledge societies through information and communication. UNESCO has launched several initiatives and global movements, such as Education For All.
ContextThe Tech Volunteers for Resilience (Tech4R) programme mobilizes skilled digital volunteers to co-create open-source solutions that strengthen disaster resilience. This assignment focuses on building digital tools and dashboards that support real-time decision-making in disaster contexts. Children aged 10โ16 in Ukraine face daily safety risks due to air raid alerts, shelling, and unexploded ordnance. Traditional manuals are often ineffective for this age group, while gamified learning can teach life-saving actions in an interactive and emotionally safe way. Tech4R and UNESCO are co-developing a mobile application that offers two learning modes: 1. Gamified training with interactive choices for real-life scenarios; and 2. Simulation-based AR mode for younger or neurodiverse children. The Team Lead will support coordination of the multidisciplinary volunteer team of developers, designers, educators, and psychologists to create a child-friendly, inclusive, and validated training tool that promotes psychological safety and disaster preparedness.
Task DescriptionThe Volunteer will provide support to the project team in: โข Coordinating volunteers specializing in mobile development, AR integration, education, and psychology. โข Overseeing the design and testing of gamified and AR-based modules. โข Ensuring that all visuals, scripts, and interactions adhere to child-protection and psychological safety standards. โข Facilitating pilot testing and feedback collection with educators and parents. โข Supporting the final integration of localization, documentation, and handover materials.
