Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a Communications Specialist I/II to join the Communications and Public Affairs (CPA) team and play a key role in promoting IFPRI research through various social media platforms. The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in digital and social media, excellent verbal and written communications skills, and an ability to translate academic research into compelling written and visual stories/messages. This role requires understanding of social media best practices, community management and social listening, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

The Communications Specialist will work under the direction of the Manager of Media and Digital Engagement in collaboration with all CPA teams.

This is a full time exempt, one-year, renewable appointment. The position is based at IFPRI headquarters in Washington.

Contribute to the development and implementation of IFPRIโ€™s social media strategy with clear and measurable goals. Draft and post original social media content for IFPRI Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other platforms. Propose and develop social media campaigns to promote IFPRI research on specific topics or issues. Maintain a monthly social media editorial calendar and undertake social media listening/monitoring. Collect, analyze, and share reports on social media metrics for key IFPRI products, events, and campaigns. Work with the media, visual design, and events teams to create compelling visual and written content (toolkits) for online and social media platforms based on IFPRI work and events, taking advantage of new and emerging features and platforms for sharing content. Work closely with IFPRIโ€™s research divisions to ensure their work is represented accurately and appropriately on social media, and that their own engagement on social media platforms is supported. Train interns, HQ colleagues, and regional/country office colleagues on social media practices. Guide the launches of new IFPRI subsidiary social media accounts (e.g., regional/country office accounts, research program accounts). Collaborate with the wider CGIAR network on joint social media campaigns, propose ideas, and lead efforts when suitable. Assist with planning the content for the monthly IFPRI email newsletter; write, format, and send it via Mailchimp. Assist with drafting, editing, and disseminating outreach materials such as press releases, media advisories, blog posts, and other content. Assist with responding to press inquiries, as needed, and maintaining the media database.

Required qualifications:

At the Communications I level: Bachelorโ€™s degree in journalism, communications, social science (or similar) and two years of relevant professional experience or a Masterโ€™s degree. At the Communications II level: Bachelorโ€™s degree plus five years of relevant professional experience in Communications, International Development, preferably with an international organization; or masterโ€™s degree plus three years of experience in Communications, International Development, preferably with an international organization. Good knowledge of established social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.) and interest in exploring new and emerging platforms. Experience designing and executing social media campaigns. Excellent writing skills, with an eye for proofreading and grammar. Demonstrated ability to write clean, concise, engaging copy of highest quality on deadline, in formats including press releases, blog posts, stories, and social media posts. A creative, critical, and original thinker able to communicate complex research ideas in a concise and engaging manner. Strong analytical and superior judgment skills. Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in international development. Experience working with scientific or academic content. Knowledge of foreign languages is a plus.

Physical Demand & Work Environment:

Employee will sit in an upright position for a long period of time. Employee will lift between 0-10 pounds. Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading.
