5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesUNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, is a voluntary-funded international organization with a presence in over 150 countries, including Nepal. UNFPA is guided by the Programme of Action of the 1994 Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals. Its mission is to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young personโ€™s potential is fulfilled. The work of UNFPA is based on the premise that all human beings are entitled to equal rights and protections. We focus on women and young people because these are groups whose ability to exercise their right to sexual and reproductive health is often compromised. Our work is informed by an understanding of population dynamics, human rights and cultural sensitivity.

ContextUNFPA has been operating in Nepal since 1971, partnering with federal, provincial, and local governments, civil society organizations, and development partners to ensure equitable access to sexual and reproductive health services, especially for women, adolescents, and marginalized groups. The current Ninth Country Programme (2023โ€“2027) is aligned with Nepalโ€™s national development priorities, the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women CEDAW), the UNFPA Strategic Plan (2022โ€“2025), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). 2 Framework (UNSDCF 2023โ€“2027). UNFPA Nepalโ€™s approach integrates rights-based, gender-transformative strategies and focuses on strengthening health systems, enhancing demand for services among vulnerable populations, mainstreaming gender and population dynamics into development planning, and ensuring timely and effective humanitarian response. Through its work, UNFPA contributes to building a more inclusive, equitable, and resilient society, leaving no one behind. Under UNFPAโ€™s mandate to ensure rights and choices for all, communication is a vital instrument to advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights, influence policy, and mobilize action. Through compelling storytelling and strong visual and digital content, communication brings to life UNFPAโ€™s mission to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young personโ€™s potential is fulfilled. High-quality multimedia materials are essential to showcase the realities faced by women, girls and young people, amplify their voices, and document UNFPAโ€™s work in protecting their health, safety and dignity. The Communications team ensures that donor and government contributions are recognized through the creation of engaging and brand-compliant content which include stories, videos, photographs, infographics, reports and visibility materials that highlight impact, foster trust, and advance UNFPAโ€™s global mandate.

Task DescriptionUnder the direct supervision of Communications Analyst, the incumbent will carry out the following tasks: Support the implementation of UNFPAโ€™s communication and visibility plans. Contribute to the development and application of UNFPAโ€™s branding and visibility guidelines, ensuring consistent use of style and messaging across all documents, materials and platforms. Collect and draft human-interest stories that highlight UNFPAโ€™s key priorities in sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality, population and development, and humanitarian response, with field coverage across programme provinces. Coordinate the production of high-quality multimedia content including photos, videos, and digital materials for use on UNFPAโ€™s social media channels, websites, events, and publications. Facilitate photo and video storytelling workshops that engage adolescents, youth, and community members to amplify their voices and experiences. Support field missions, advocacy events, and high-level visits with appropriate communication, documentation and visibility materials. Prepare text and visuals for UNFPA Nepalโ€™s social media and digital communication platforms. Design and produce infographics, factsheets, and other visual assets to communicate key results and evidence of impact. Additional tasks: Support the organization of capacity-building sessions for project teams, field offices, and implementing partners on communications, storytelling, photography, videography, and brand compliance. โ€ข Assist in co-creation sessions that enhance local capacity for content production, ensuring alignment with UNFPAโ€™s tone of voice, brand identity, and mandate to ensure rights and choices for all. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: โ€ข Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); โ€ข Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; โ€ข Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities. โ€ข Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; โ€ข Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; โ€ข Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Living conditions and remarksKathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is categorized as a B duty station by the United Nations, indicating a family-duty station with generally good living conditions. A wide range of affordable accommodation options is available, including both furnished and unfurnished apartments. The city offers access to both local and imported goods, with numerous supermarkets, restaurants, coffee shops, and social venues catering to diverse preferences. Public transportation is readily available, and taxis are common and reasonably priced. However, environmental challenges such as air pollution and water quality persist. It is advisable to use filtered drinking water and to wear a face mask, particularly in high-traffic or dusty areas. Healthcare services are available in Kathmandu, with a number of hospitals and clinics offering basic and specialized care. While the city is relatively safe, standard precautions should always be observed. Overall, Kathmandu offers a vibrant cultural experience and a comfortable standard of living for international personnel
