Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities. UN-Habitat promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty. The position is located in the Communications and Media Section of the External Relations and Partnerships Branch, within the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division (ERSKI) of UN-Habitat in Nairobi. ERSKI is responsible for strategic planning, programmatic direction, and the operationalization of UN-Habitat's focal point role for the New Urban Agenda in the UN system, as well as for the coordination of Emergency Programmes. The External Relations and Partnerships Branch is responsible for the development and promulgation of coherent organizational messages that are closely aligned with the strategic priorities; the development and monitoring of the integrated resource mobilization strategy; and the management of resource allocation. The Communications and Media Section is responsible for promoting UN-Habitat as a centre of excellence and innovation, the thought leader and go-to in the context of the 2030 Agenda, the New Urban Agenda (NUA), and UN-Habitat's Strategic Plan; developing content for effective communication on priority trends in the NUA and urban development aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals, campaigns, launches, and events for a wide variety of platforms and audiences; developing policy on the coordination of corporate and project communications/events and implementing them; and developing and managing corporate branding, websites, and exhibitions. Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer in the External Relations, Strategy and Innovation Division, Innovation Section, and in close collaboration with the Chief of Communication, the intern will: โข Support the Chief of Communication in reviewing, recording, distributing, and/or processing correspondence and other documents, including e-mails and hard copies; follow up on pending actions as required. โข Assist in monitoring processes and schedules related to the Chief of Communicationโs work plan and calendar; verify receipt, accuracy, and completion of requisite documents and approvals. โข Provide administrative and logistical support to meetings, boards, committees, and conferences; assist in the planning and organization of meetings and presentations. โข Draft responses to routine correspondence and other communications as requested. โข Take minutes of meetings, boards, or committees as assigned. โข Support the preparation of presentations, briefing notes, and talking points for the Chief of Communication; producing copies of documents or materials as requested. โข Assist in the preparation of social media post drafts and related materials in collaboration with the social media and production team. โข Contribute to content and editorial work by clarifying and verifying information as requested. โข Provide support to the team and section coordinator in administrative tasks, coordination of workflows, and production of materials in line with the editorial calendar. โข Perform any other tasks that may be assigned by the supervisor or the team. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Applicants must have studies in a relevant field of study in languages, journalism, marketing or communications. Students of international relations or related fields may also be considered for this internship. Strong drafting skills in English. Proficiency in other official UN languages is preferred. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Masterโs or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelorโs, Masterโs or PH.D.
