Setting and ReportingThis position is located within the International Trade Law Division (ITLD), Office of Legal Affairs (OLA), which serves as a substantive Secretariat to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and is based in Vienna. The Associate Legal Officer reports to a Senior Legal Officer as first reporting Officer, and to the Director of the Division as second reporting Officer. ResponsibilitiesWithin assigned authority, the Associate Legal Officer will be responsible for the following duties: โข Conduct legal research and analysis and prepare studies in international trade and investment law, comparative studies, briefs, reports and correspondence. โข Assist legal officers in the review of legal documents, instruments, or other material and identify important issues, similarities, and inconsistencies. โข Assist in the preparation of drafts of background papers, studies, reports, legislative texts and commentaries on those texts, also prepare or assist in the preparation of teaching materials in the field of international trade and investment law as well as private international law, etc. โข Assist senior colleagues in servicing meetings of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and its subsidiary bodies, conferences, expert groups and other bodies (in-person and hybrid), including preparation of background materials, summaries of issues and views of delegations, meeting reports, etc. โข Assist senior colleagues in organizing and servicing informal sessions and in preparing portions of draft reports. โข Assist in administering programmes of legal technical assistance, in particular with regard to the implementation of investor-State dispute settlement reforms. โข Assist with the preparation of international trade law seminars and symposia, lecture on various legal issues at such events. โข Assist the Legal Officer managing the legal content for the UNCITRAL website and social media platforms in developing and maintaining the content of the UNCITRAL website and help to ensure that information is posted in a coordinated and structured manner. โข Contribute to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provide draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. โข Perform other work-related duties as assigned. A first-level university degree in law in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Work experience in international dispute settlement, preferably investor-State dispute settlement and investment law is desirable. Work experience in the creation or management of websites is desirable. Work experience with the presentation and dissemination of legal materials in an online environment is desirable. Experience in operating online meeting platforms is desirable. Experience with policies, procedures and operations of the United Nations system or a similar international organization is desirable.
