Work LocationKenya Expected duration5 Months Duties and ResponsibilitiesAbout UN-Habitat UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation. The Planning, Finance and Economy Section (PFES) of UN-Habitat supports countries in developing urban planning methods and systems that address current urbanization challenges. It promotes urban planning approaches to address urban expansion and transformation. UN-Habitatโs Global Public Space Programme works with national and local governments to improve public spaces globally. The objectives of the Programme are: To promote public space as an important element for creating sustainable cities, for improving the quality of life of urban citizens, and as a key lever in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, continuing the dialogue following Habitat III and for monitoring the implementation of the SDG 11.7.1; To consolidate knowledge, good approaches, tools and methodologies on public space and make these accessible, particularly to local government partners; To engage the broader network of partners and public space practitioners in the global promotion of good policies and practice on public space; To demonstrate, through pilot projects and inpartnership with cities, the importance of public spaces in achieving social, economic, environmental and other benefits to cities. Reporting and Communication The Public Space and Public Policy expert will be hired to collaborate closely with the Global Public Space Programme team of PFES. He/she will be reporting to the Manager of the Global Public Space Programme. Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the consultant will be responsible for the following duties: The overall role of the Consultant is to provide technical to the Global Public Space Programme, particularly in the implementation of the Sustainable Public Space and Facility Development Project, and the Park City Initiative. This includes desk research, report writing, organizing and facilitation of events, and coordination with the local and international partners. Additionally, the consultant will also work on the other cooperation, activities and initiatives globally, including assisting the normative work and projects in relation to Programme and Global Public Space Network (GPSN). Public Space & Facility: 1. Draft policy briefs and support research on public facility typologies, local regulations, regional trends, and capacity gaps, emphasizing integrated development within broader urban services and public space networks. 2. Collect and compile global case studies to identify best practices, guiding principles, and lessons learned in public space and facility planning. 3. Draft a technical report on inclusive and productive public spaces and facilities, consolidating relevant studies, data, and policy statements to highlight frameworks, trends, demands, implementation approaches, and socio-economic impacts. 4. prepare concept notes, coordination tasks, and presentations for workshops, brown bag sessions, meetings, and conferences; organize session documentation, reports, and follow-up actions. Park City Initiative: 5. Comparative study of existing urban frameworks, indexes, reports, and toolkits; identify gaps in data analysis and consolidate findings into a comprehensive report. 6. Collect, compile, and spatially analyze data to produce maps, graphics, and statistics supporting the Park City Initiative. 7. Contribute to the development of technical and normative outputs, such as spatial strategies, situational analyses, and guidelines for Park City assessment and implementation. 8. Conduct case studies on relevant global networks, alliances, and associations; support the promotion of the Park City Initiative and related UN-Habitat products through communications, event organization, and stakeholder engagement. 9. Identifying and mapping potential partners to support future collaboration on inclusive and productive public space and facility development Qualifications/special skillsEducation and Experience A university degree in Public Policies, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Architecture, Geography, or related subjects is required. At least two (2) years of experience working in public policies, urban planning and design with knowledge in geospatial analysis, mapping and cartography using GIS tools is required.
