Mission and objectivesUNICEF, mandated by the United Nations General Assembly, advocates for the protection of children's rights, striving to meet their basic needs and expand their opportunities. Guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF aims to establish children's rights as enduring ethical principles and international standards of behaviour towards children. In Brazil, UNICEF has been active since 1950, supporting significant advancements in childhood and adolescence. Their contributions include major immunization and breastfeeding campaigns, mobilizing efforts for the approval of article 227 of the Federal Constitution and the drafting of the Child and Adolescent Statute, advocating for universal access to education, and implementing programs to combat child labour. These initiatives have been crucial in guaranteeing the rights of Brazilian children. To address these challenges, UNICEF promotes commitments to guarantee the rights of children and adolescents through initiatives like the UNICEF Seal in the Semiarid and the Brazilian Legal Amazon.
ContextMillions of people around the world support UNICEF and its mission by raising funds, advocating, and volunteering to help children in various ways. This global network of supporters represents a powerful opportunity to deepen engagement with a committed group of volunteersโsignificantly expanding UNICEFโs reach and transformative potential. Volunteers can play a unique role in strengthening UNICEFโs work by: - Building stronger connections, improving communication, and enhancing accountability between UNICEF and the communities it serves. - Fostering dynamic dialogue, debate, and knowledge sharing about childrenโs rights in the areas where UNICEF operates. - Expanding UNICEFโs presence and visibility, thereby amplifying program impact and strengthening advocacy and the UNICEF brand for child rights. Since 2020, as part of the digital communication strategy โ including, but not only, UNICEFโs social networks strategy - UNICEF Brazil has run an online volunteer program, #tmjUNICEF, designed to share information, co-create advocacy campaigns, and promote behaviour change around childrenโs rights, mental health, climate change, and misinformation. The initiative provides young people with tools to create social media contentโsuch as videos and carouselsโhelping them amplify UNICEFโs messages across their own channels as well as UNICEFโs platforms. The program currently counts with around 150 active volunteers. Beyond the online volunteering efforts of #tmjUNICEF, the digital communication team in UNICEF Brazil also coordinates five Youth Advocates and one Youth Health Advocate (who is part of the Youth Health Council). These advocates serve as young representatives of UNICEFโs mission, acting as spokespersons in public events, and embodying the organizationโs values. They receive ongoing training and guidance from UNICEF to ensure their participation is meaningful, informed, and aligned with the organizationโs strategic priorities.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and other living essentials. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. Brazil is security level 3 (moderate). United Nations Department of Safety and Security UNDSS Brazil advises to exercise a high degree of caution in Brazil due to high levels of serious and violent crime, particularly in major cities. Violent crime as muggings, armed robbery, kidnappings, and sexual assault, is very high. Avoid shanty towns (favelas) in the big cities and if you are attacked or robbed, do not resist. Demonstrations can occur at any time and may turn violent with little or no warning.
