Technical Writer - Consultant Winrock International is a nonprofit organization that works with people in the United States and around the world to empower the disadvantaged, increase economic opportunity, and sustain natural resources. Winrock International is looking to engage Technical Writers to support projects within the Ecosystem Services Unit (ECO). A successful candidate will be an experienced technical writer who has: An ability to communicate complex technical ideas in a clear and compelling way through technical documentation. The ability to synthesize inputs from multiple writers into cohesive documents with a unified voice. A talent for conceptualizing ideas for graphics that convey key information. A working knowledge of climate change and environmental risks facing food and forests systems. ECOSYSTEM SERVICES UNIT (ECO): Selected writers will collaborate on materials with members of the ECO team. The ECO team has been at the cutting edge of the evaluation of ecosystem services from forests and agriculture for 25 years. The ECO team is a global leader in carbon accounting in food systems and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+). Past ECO team projects have focused on: Conducting GHG measurement and monitoring activities for companies and governments. Developing tools and games for building community resilience and adaptation in the face of climate change. Providing technical support and tools to countries, project developers, and private sector entities to support high quality offsets. Developing forest inventory design, carbon measurement, and monitoring protocols. Building capacity building tools and training programs for ecosystem assessments. Creating decision-support tools for the measurement and monitoring of GHG emissions and ecosystem services in the land use and forestry sectors. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: This position works with technical specialists within our private sector area to develop comprehensive product documentation and end-user documentation such as instruction manuals, reference guides, and training modules. The technical writer would translate complex information into polished content and write user-friendly content that meets the needs of the target audience. CONSULTANT RESPONSIBILITIES: Thoroughly review supporting documents and work with the team to develop a detailed outline that will guide the organization and content of technical documentation. Interview and gather technical information from a team of technical specialists. Develop a narrative by collecting, integrating, and ensuring the quality of inputs and contributions from subject matter specialists. Review, revise, and edit the technical contributions provided by subject matter experts. Collaborate with project leaders to incorporate the suggestions and feedback of technical document reviewers in a timely manner. Develop visuals and graphics that reinforce narrative messages. Follow project calendar and meet established deadlines. QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND: Education: Bachelorโ€™s degree is required and a focus on environmental science, forestry, ecology, environmental policy, geography, or a related discipline preferred. Work Experience: Two or more years of experience as a technical writer. Experience in writing documentation and procedure manuals for business audiences is preferred. Skills: Proven ability to quickly learn and understand complex subject matter. Superb organizational skills, with a keen eye for detail. Exceptional conceptual, analytical, writing, and editing skills, including knack for synthesizing large amounts of information into persuasive, clear language and graphics.
