Mission and objectivesThe International Organization for Migration (IOM) is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It supports governments and migrants by offering services and policy guidance to ensure migration is managed safely, responsibly, and with dignity; contributing to development, humanitarian response, and the protection of human rights. In the Caribbean, migration has been central to shaping the regionโs identity. From the tragedy of slavery to todayโs vibrant diasporas and multi-generational migrant communities, mobility remains both a cornerstone of society and an enduring aspiration. Today, the region faces growing challenges such as climate change, demographic shifts, and labor shortages among them. Migration can serve as a vital tool to enhance resilience, foster inclusive development, and support effective governance. Composed largely of small island developing states (SIDS), the Caribbean has unique vulnerabilities. Economies are dependent on imports, tourism, and remittances, with populations clustered in coastal areas. This makes countries especially vulnerable to climate-related disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and sea level rise. Without stronger investment in preparedness and adaptation, the risk of displacement is likely to grow. At the same time, ageing populations and ongoing outward migration, especially to the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., are creating labor gaps in key sectors. While CARICOMโs intra-regional labor mobility offers solutions, attracting external labor may become necessary, marking a shift for a region traditionally seen as one of origin.
ContextThis assignment forms part of IOM Jamaicaโs efforts to advance gender equality and strengthen protection for women and girls affected by displacement and insecurity. Jamaica faces a range of migration-related challenges that intersect with gender-based vulnerabilities, particularly at the community level. By developing evidence-based project concepts, IOM seeks to better understand the needs of displaced women and girls, highlight gaps in existing responses, and identify opportunities for tailored interventions. The Online Volunteerโs research and inputs will contribute to building a stronger foundation for programming that empowers women and girls, enhances community resilience, and supports national efforts to address gender and displacement in line with IOMโs global mandate and Jamaicaโs development priorities.
Task DescriptionIOM Jamaica is seeking one Online Volunteer, preferably from the Caribbean, to provide research and project development support with a focus on gender and displacement. Under the guidance of IOM staff, the volunteer will conduct desk research using sources such as UN reports, academic studies, and relevant articles to gather evidence on the situation of women and girls affected by displacement and insecurity in Jamaica. Based on the findings, the volunteer will draft a concept note that outlines potential project interventions and provide data-driven recommendations to strengthen national and community-based responses. The Online Volunteer will collaborate remotely with the IOM Jamaica team and receive guidance and feedback throughout the process. This assignment offers a unique opportunity to contribute to advancing gender equality, while gaining practical experience in research and project development within a humanitarian and development context. The volunteer will also have the chance to learn how research on gender can inform programming and support vulnerable communities in Jamaica.
