5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe UNDP Sustainable Energy Hub is a network of partners that work alongside countries to transform energy systems though an integrated agenda focused on the policy, technology and financial shifts that shape sustainable economic development. We help countries build net-zero, people-centered societies driven by a just, sustainable energy transition. Our core principle is to promote an integrated agenda that supports energy for development, including by mobilizing partners to enable 500 million additional people to have access to sustainable, reliable, affordable energy by 2025, leaving no-one behind. The global transformation of energy systems has already started, but is being altered by the current geopolitical context. However, this transformation must be accelerated, and it must be done in a way that advances the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Energy Hub is UNDPโ€™s answer to these challenges. To drive the systems-level change needed, the Sustainable Energy Hub aims to bring about a completely new way of thinking, doing business, connecting people and knowledge. UNDPโ€™s 2022-2025 Strategic Plan has put sustainable energy at the heart of a joint corporate mission, and UN-Energy has pledged to reaching key energy milestones by 2025. UNDP will focus efforts on mobilizing partners and catalzing action to provide access to sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy โ€“ both electricity and clean cooking โ€“ to 500 million people by 2025, focusing on the worldโ€™s poorest communities. UNDP will not do this alone โ€“ our role here is to mobilize strong, meaningful, impactful partnerships to deliver action on the ground. We aim to bring about a new way of thinking about energy and advocate for an integrated, inclusive approach, where all stakeholders participate meaningfully in its design.

ContextWe are looking for 9 online volunteers to support the development of a centralized Photo Bankโ€”a visual library that will serve as a key asset for the Sustainable Energy Hubโ€™s communications and outreach efforts. This role involves uploading, tagging, and expanding our image database on the Piwigo platform, ensuring metadata is preserved and visuals are searchable and well-organized.

Task DescriptionEach of the 9 volunteers will take lead on one of the 5 UNDP regions, as well as take lead on a few specific thematics for sourcing photos. Each volunteer will be responsible for sourcing, cataloguing, and tagging a minimum of 200 photos from their region and thematics. Some percentage of these photos are already available in our existing catalogue, and the rest will need to be found through searching provided sources. The assignment will be structured in two phases. In Phase 1, volunteers will focus on building the photo bank by sourcing, uploading, and tagging images in Piwigo. In Phase 2, volunteers will apply the curated photos directly to the Sustainable Energy Academy slides in Figma, replacing existing images and ensuring that all visuals used are properly documented. Responsibilities: - Apply accurate and consistent tags to each photo using a taxonomy provided by the SEH team, ensuring clear organization and uniform metadata formatting across all images - Scrape metadata from the previous platform (Flickr) to ensure author, license, and description information is preserved during migration of photos into the Piwigo platform - Identify and compile additional high-quality, relevant images to support UNDPโ€™s Sustainable Energy Academy - Replace images in designated Figma slides using the curated photo bank - Document any newly sourced images used in slides in a shared metadata tracking sheet Benefits for Volunteers: - Volunteers will have the opportunity to contribute to a high-impact visual resource for UNDPโ€™s Sustainable Energy Hub and support photo selection for the Sustainable Energy Academy. Weekly meetings and collaboration with professionals from UNDP and the energy sector will offer valuable insights into visual communication and sustainable development.
