Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Statistics Division (SD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The Statistician reports to the Chief of the Sustainable Development Goals Monitoring Section (SDGMS). The Division compiles and disseminates global statistical information, develops standards and norms for statistical activities, and supports countries' efforts to strengthen their national statistical systems. ResponsibilitiesWithin the direct supervision of the Chief of Section and the overall guidance of the Director, the Statisticians will be responsible for the following duties: โ€ข Organizes, designs, plans and carries out the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical data by selecting methods of data collection, selecting and implementing methods for checking collected data, and selecting and implementing appropriate methods for data processing for incorporation into databases. โ€ข Participates in the development, implementation and management of statistical database(s). โ€ข Provides training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information, especially as it relates to the use of innovative data sources, tools and methods for production of national statistics. โ€ข Participates in the development or revision of standards on statistical concepts, definitions and classifications by performing methodological research. โ€ข Prepares draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assists in drafting relevant reports. โ€ข Organizes and participates in seminars, working groups and expert meetings as a technical resource person. โ€ข Guides trains and supervises general service staff. โ€ข Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. โ€ข Performs other duties as assigned. Work ExperienceA minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data or related area is required. Experience in project or programme management in statistics or related area is required. Experience in developing statistical capacities of national statistical offices, especially in IT modernization in Africa, Asia, and Latin America is required. At least three years of experience working for an international organization on capacity development projects for national statistical offices in developing countries is required. A minimum of two years of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
