The Impact You will Make:

The Senior Manager, Media will deliver innovative and influential news coverage of Save the Childrenโ€™s work to support our programs and help deliver our fundraising, brand, campaign, and advocacy objectives.


This role will amplify and ensure the work Save the Children does is prominent in the Canadian media. They will drive a strategic proactive news approach, spotting opportunities, selling journalists unique story ideas and stimulating media commentary and debate. The Senior Manager, Media will lead on the daily news agenda, will react swiftly to breaking stories and handle any requests. This role will deliver evidence-based communications planning, implementation, and evaluation and will have a deep understanding of public relations, media relations, and crisis management.

Lead the development and execution of a robust media relations strategy that serves to amplify Save the Children as a thought leader and go-to organization on childrenโ€™s rights.ย Manage the delivery of a quality media coverage across Canada.ย Deliver excellent coverage targeted at key influential audiences across broadcast, print, digital, and consumer media.ย Lead on positioning Save the Children as a go-to for media in emergencies.ย Map, build and maintain relationships with key media including foreign and news desks, commentators, foreign correspondents, and newswires.ย Oversee, nurture, and develop influential media partnerships.ย Own and manage the spokesperson strategy, including comprehensive media training to all spokespeople.ย Provide updated media briefings to all spokespeople, including one-to-one briefings for specific interviews, as needed.ย Work effectively with all parts of the organization to ensure the successful accomplishment of Save the Childrenโ€™s strategic objectives in fundraising, programs, partnerships, brand, and advocacy.ย Work with the Head of Communications, Media and PR, and other stakeholders to develop integrated media, communications, and PR plans.ย Provide strategic leadership to president & CEO on thought leadership and media relations.ย Support the Ambassador Media and PR strategy in Canada.

Monitoring and Reportingย 

Manage media contacts and monitoring database.ย Manage and update media contact lists.ย Provide media coverage reports (daily news scan, monthly, quarterly)ย Analyze media coverage and gaps in coverage to inform strategy.ย Monitor news and report on the media landscape to inform organizational opportunities and risks.

Stakeholder and Relationship Managementย 

Foster and maintain strong relationships with media colleagues at Save the Children international, Member offices, sector peers and coalition partners.ย Actively participate in the strategic planning process.ย Act as senior media contact for Save the Children in Canada.ย Act as a spokesperson, when appropriate.ย Provide strategic communications advice to the Executive and SLT, as required.ย Deputize for the Head of Communications, Media and PR as required.ย Support crisis management responsibilities with the Head of Communications, Media and Public Relations, which may require urgent and after-hours work.

People Management and other tasksย 

Supervise mentor and coach staff responsible for the development and implementation of media relations.ย Oversee the workflow, help to set and adjust priorities, and troubleshoots where needed.ย Active member of SCCโ€™s People Management team, participating in all trainings, etc.ย Responsible for recruitment and performance management within the team.ย Set clear team and individual performance expectations for productivity, quality, and success; providing direction and support as needed.ย In compliance with HR policies and the Collective Agreement, lead employees using a performance management process that includes regular one-on-one interaction, performance goal setting, timely feedback, and recognition.ย Model behaviours consistent with Save the Children values, actively creating an organizational culture that reflects values.ย Managerial responsibilities of ensuring health and safety, proactive risk management through organizational policy enforcement and maintaining organizational policies and procedures and integrating Child Safeguarding practices across our work.ย Provide oversight and direction to direct reports, including coaching and mentorship to support employee career development.ย Ensures regular strategic communications with employee teams to share relevant and timely information related to organizational strategy, operations, leadership decisions, policies, and other important information.ย Commit to living and the organizationโ€™s principles and values and conducting oneself in a professionally and respectfully and reporting any violations witnessed.Commit to creating and maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all and to treating others with respect and dignity.


Qualifications (include but are not limited to):

A post-secondary degree, college diploma or equivalent yearsโ€™ work experience in Communication, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.A minimum of five (5) yearsโ€™ experience in a senior media relations capacity, including experience in crisis management.Proven experience in developing effective media and communications products.Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).Proven experience in driving innovative initiatives within a fast-paced environment and the strong ability to think creatively and strategically.Demonstrated success in building and retaining a high-performing team including recruiting, coaching, managing staff.Experience providing leadership, support, and mobilizing stakeholders with the ability to foster an open and collaborative environment.Sound judgment, tact and diplomacy, excellent relationship-building and interpersonal skills, i.e., active listening, consistency and accountability, honesty and open communication, open-to-change and adaptable.An integrated approach to media relations, communications, branding.Experience in international development/affairs communications (an asset).Full proficiency in English required; French proficiency is an asset.
