Org. Setting and ReportingThe temporary position is located within the United Nations Support Office in Haiti (UNSOH). Pursuant to Security Council resolution 2793 (2025), UNSOH has been mandated to provide support; primarily to the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), the Haitian National Police (HNP), and the Haitian Armed Forces in the context of any joint operations with the GSF. Additionally, UNSOH is tasked with delivering technical assistance to the Organization of American States (OAS). The incumbent reports to the Chief/Deputy Security Officer or to a Senior Security Officer. The principal duty of the Security Officer is to provide timely and effective efforts to recognize potential threats and recommends corrective action to alleviate or prevent injury to United Nations staff, property or operations. The temporary position is based in Port-au-Prince and is located with the Safety and Security Section, Emergency Response Team. ResponsibilitiesThe Security Officer, FS-5 will perform the following tasks: โข Assists the PSA/CSO/Security Coordination Officers in the office management procedures and/or supervises a Security Unit, as needed; โข Assists to develop and monitor the implementation of security contingency plans for a security unit; โข Manages the daily operations and administration duties related to the functions of a security emergency response team; โข Assesses prevailing local security conditions, identifying security trends and advising UN personnel, project personnel and eligible dependents on security issues; โข If required, serves as a member of the Security Cell, contributing to implementation and evaluation of the security plan; โข Evaluates air, land and sea emergency evacuation capability; conducts evacuation exercises and recommends appropriate action; โข Determines accessible areas, maintains tracking systems and coordinates a 24-hour Emergency Response System; โข Assesses the level of security risk for the area of operations; โข Monitors, conducts or coordinates security operations; โข Maintains continuing lines of communication with security focal points and other UN or non-UN stake holders; โข Briefs the PSA/CSO/Security Coordination Officer or Deputy PSA/CSO on the status, activity and requirements of the unit; โข Identifies the training needs of security unit and mission staff; โข Provides initial security support and intervention to all incidents/accidents such as armed robbery, road traffic accidents and other forms of emergencies affecting UNSMS personnel; โข Identifies gaps in existing capability and makes recommendation for amendment where necessary; โข Inspects Security equipment and ensures minimum equipment requirements are purchased, maintained and deployed in accordance with relevant policy; โข Performs other duties as required. EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent technical or vocational certificate is required. Job - Specific QualificationRelevant United Nations training and valid certification in use of the following firearms: Glock 19 Pistol, MP5 sub machine gun, G 36 sub machine gun is required: Work ExperienceA minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in the military, police or security management of which a minimum of two years of experience in security operations centers or similar within a military, police or security organization is required. At least one yearโs experience and exposure at the international level and in a conflict or post conflict environment is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required. French is desirable.
